Why remake a great classic film like this?

I wonder if there just aren't enough good scripts. Or is it something about younger generations that must see their own "stars" (James Belushi?) in a classic role before they can identify. Whatever the issue, here's a film that is not worth the time to download. The original 1943 version with Bogart said all there is needed to say about this script.

Original was great, but I like this one better.

Hollywood isn't short of script's, just good stories. By remaking a popular or successful film, the film makers are most likely to make a little money. Sometimes it is a horrible idea like the steve Martin remake of Peter Sellers Pink Panther character Clouseau.

When the moguls ran the business they could pick and choose among original stories based on personal tastes. MGM was known for musicals and family movies. Warners was tough, cheap, hardboiled. A mogul could greenlight a project even if it might not make back its money, simply because he liked the story. The studios and moguls are dead and the people in charge now have a Masters degree in Business Administration. They're financiers who don't care very much about quality or originality. The question they ask themselves is a simple one: Will it make money?
