Main character is supposed to be a void?

This movie wasn't very appealing to me, but I understood the "deep" message to be that Carol was emotionless and empty and nobody had any reason to love her. She often acted like a newborn baby. Her body failed her because she wasn't really living. She joined the healing-cult-thing because it induced an atmosphere of artificial love. At the end, she tries to will herself to love herself, but it doesn't seem to work. She didn't understand what she was doing most of the time because she doesn't have any personality. I don't really like that message but that's what I got out of it. Thoughts?
