Would've been better .......

This Movie would've been so much better without Meg Ryan, not her character but her. The death of John Pearce (David Thewlis) was supposed to be an emotional scene and it was until Meg Ryan appeared and started wailing and screaming, total mood killer.

I've never been a Meg Ryan fan but I've seen a few (well 2) movies were I've thought that she wasn't too bad but in my opinion she is awful in this movie.

Anything involving Meg Ryan would be better without Meg Ryan. Everyone I've ever met who I've discussed Meg Ryan with hates her.

Heh. Couldn't agree more. Trout Pout needs to take an early retirement, move to France and never surface again.

Yawn...

Caught this movie late at night once and twas good, so I watched it. I thought RD Jr. was very good at showing how Robert grows up through all his experiences.

Jesus! I only just clocked he has the same name as his character! Hahaha!

All I know is my gut says maybe.

haha... I was thinking that as well... must have been easier for him to get into character tho...

Yeah, I don't like her in this role at all, or in almost anything, for that matter. She did all right in "When Harry Met Sally", which put her on the map -- but then, so would any number of other actresses. It was a cute part that any decent actress could have carried well.

Personally, I can't understand why she keeps getting cast. She was so out of place in this film. I think once her 'cute' factor is gone, she'll be kind of like Melanie Griffith. You know, "Melanie Who?"

Meg Ryan starred in director Michael Hoffman's very first feature film (Promised Land) - one of her better dramatic roles in fact, although the movie itself is no great shakes. I presume Hoffman offered her the part in Restoration as a courtesy to an old friend with whom he'd worked before, and to add a little "star power" for Miramax. The studio may have wanted another Amreican star in the movie.

The plan backfired however, as Ryan is so clearly out of place in the movie. I love this film but generally pretend she isn't there during her scenes. ;-) Just too painful since everyone around her is so good.

lol yeah, i dnt see when harry met sally or many of her movies but i thought she did best in "kate n leopold" that was her best, as for this movie, she couldnt pull off the Katharine character... she was soo awful, i actually thought she was supposed to be a good actress since shes so famous.. oh well

rdj was of coarse spectacular, i wouldnt say this is my favorite role of his, bcuz i prefer him wthout the wig during the movie n they focused too much on him with the wig... but overall he was really good

also ian mcellen was amazing; this actor is incredible, i cant think of a role of his he dnt pull off

i actually prefer if the movie ended with lady celia & robert together at the end, bcuz i thought that they looked reall cute togthr but i guess not everythign has to end like fairytales :P

btw is this supposed to be based on a true story?

Why so Serious?! let's Put a SMILE on that face!

Meg Ryan could ruin a ham sandwich, she is the worst.

I agree. Not saying that I'm a Meg Ryan hater, but she was certainly out of place and out of step in Restoration, which took me out of the historical bubble which was otherwise so superb up to that point. From first sight, she already looked somewhat modern (hair, make-up) and then she became increasingly like her romantic comedy character (like the card game scene), different names, different movies but essentially the same familiar character (Prelude to When Sleepless Harry Got Mail and French Kissed Joe in Seattle vs. the Volcano).
