Why walk off at the end?

I know it's been 15 years but it always bugged me.

Why does she walk off into the sunset at the end besides it being a western movie cliche?

Wasn't she hurt from the shootout? Didn't she make some good friends in this town? Where the hell is she going?

She was only playing at being the brooding gunslinger. After she got her revenge she should've given up that role (which wasn't the real her anyway) and grew some real roots with real people in a town she could help rebuild. Wouldn't that have been a more satisfying ending than that cliched Shane fadeout?

Anyway, fun movie. Not good, just fun.

Maybe it was cliched, but character-wise, there was no reason for Ellen to stay. She didn't really bond with anyone besides maybe Cort and the Kid, and after Kid was killed and she found out Cort used to be a protege of Herod, that broke all ties to the town. Her only mission was to kill Herod and close that chapter of her life for good. Hence why she left at the end: leaving the past behind her and moving on to a new life.
