I was going to start a thread about this, couldn't believe nobody had, until I saw this one !
I agree with the OP.
The story in itself is quite enchanting and even if done in 1995, the only thing that truly bothered me was the music.
Truly unfortunate overuse of dated music personally.

Then I looked up the director of this movie, director and writer and just...
Yuck, how he sees himself is just horrible.
Not only that the thing that truly made me sick is the scene where they take Powder's pants off and laugh at him for being totally hairless, like a boy.
And the actor playing Powder plays the little lost boy very well.

The story in itself is great, but the fact the director said this story came to him while he was in prison paying for his crime just sickens me.

If it had been made by anyone else, first off it probably would've been done better (and no I'm not trolling just stating personal taste) and it wouldn't leave such a bad aftertaste.

It's just another perspective. You may not agree with it (and I don't) but it is interesting.

The only reason I could see for taking personal offence would be if you knew someone who is, or maybe are yourself, a victim of sexual abuse.

Otherwise it is indescribably wrongheaded, but still undeniably fascinating... In the same way as I'd be extremely curious to watch a movie made by someone like Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, it still wouldn't mean that I agreed with him.
