This was a great movie

I loved it. More people should watch it. Unfortunatly there are so many people who hate subtitles.I swear they need to get over that, especially since they keep missing masterpieces such as this.

I agree! Loved this movie and I've gotten used to sub-titles just from viewing a handful of wonderful films (check out "Umberto D" sometime - it's another gem.)

And now for something completely different...

Ill look into it =D

I am from Hawaii and this story is very similar to my parent's story, as well as some of my friend's parents. This gives me a glimpse of my a father's reality as a young man--a heart-breaking reality of how hard cane field workers toiled.

This was definitely a hidden gem. Imo, people should watch this movie and George Clooney's 'The Descendants' back-to-back.

I agree with that pairing. So may people missed the point of the "Descendants" and didn't see the real conflict between Clooney, his wife's extramarital affair, the decision to take her off life support, and his decision to sell the family property. I am watching Picture Bride now and there are so many nuances to this that one has to really watch for them. I have no problem with subtitles and foreign films. When I see a film that says Cannes or Sundance that means a good film.

Just saw it myself and have to say it's a great flick. Really depicts the hardships of the plantation days. The story doesn't go overboard on the romance segments and isn't entirely predictable. Also enjoyed how they put the right elements in to understand the foreshadow of how Hawaii's political history was to be shaped just a few decades thereafter, lasting till this day. The dislike of the white man is portrayed perfectly as a strong historical backdrop to anyone who is not familiar with the why's of racism in Hawaii.

Agreed on both counts. This was a really good movie, and it's a shame how small-minded so many people are that they miss out on movies like this out of an irrational hatred of subtitles.
