Corniest race scenes, ever, ever, ever....
I almost busted my gut laughing watching that final race. I swear I don't know if they intended it to be a comedy race, but the race sequences were so bad, they had to be funny. A course that's alternately extremely wet and then dry and it wasn't even raining. It was more like an off-road race than anything. Cars that drive off the track and pass cars that are on the track? I don't think you'll ever see so many cars spinning out on a straight. Can anyone imagine cars that slice through Armco barriers like they were plastic (which I'm sure they were). Phony, phony, phony crashes that were just impossible. Cars were flipping and rolling and I never saw any emergency crews or fire marshals.
Why did they have to do all the race playback at near double speed? I counted flagmen on that course and I doubt if there were more than four. The same guy kept waving a yellow flag and nobody even slowed down, not even for that corner. As many crashes and spins as they had, there would have been a full course yellow most of the race. Were they using three gallon tanks? Jackie must have pitted a couple of times for gas and tires, but it didn't seem as if that many laps were being run in the entire race. As far as race classes were concerned, they must have had some truly low classes the way they were being passed as if they were standing still. No way any race car can power itself out of a gravel corner trap, four-wheel drive or not.
I'm sorry to say but I have never really seen such amateur race filming in my life in any picture I can think of. It was just terrible. They used the cheesiest pyrotechnics ever to have cars spontaneously combust on fire. I mean, they looked like sparklers or flares they use for music concerts. It's just that this stuff isn't even up to races they used to film in the 1940s and 1950s. Most ridiculous race scenes ever.
I'm not knocking the film as far as entertainment value is concerned. It was good for a number of laughs and the fights were decent. Amy Yip's character was an airhead. This was definitely not one of Jackie's best movies. Not even with cars involved, since I've seen much better car action sequences in one of his other films. I realize that Jackie and the other actors give 100% in his films and all can be forgiven.
