The nugget of the story came from Harry Caudill's non-fiction Night Comes to the Cumberlands. Essays that deal with folklore, history, myth about life in the cumberland mountains over 200 years time. I feel this book was also the basis for the pulitzer prize winning play The Kentucky Cycle.. In the book There was one story about a boy killing a yankee and another story about a body dug from a grave because dead yankees should not be buried with dead rebels. Those two brief stories gave rise to the screenplay.
