This movie is similar to Happy Feet

When I looked on the comments of the videos of The Pebble and the Penguin on YouTube I noticed that there was a lot of poeple saying that Happy Feet is very much like the Pebble and the Penguin. I would almost have to agree with that because I think that whoever made Happy Feet took some ideas from the Pebble and the Penguin. Like Hubie is similar to Mumble and he encounters killer whales, leopard seals and gets captured by humans and eventually gets help from a rockhopper penguin. Tell me all of you what do you think is better Happy Feet or The Pebble and the Penguin. For me I prefer The Pebble and the Penguin a little bit better, more original and came out way before Happy Feet.

The movies are very similar too each other in my opinion.

The only sad thing is that this movie is rated so low and Happy Feet is rated too high. This movie was one of my favorites when I was a kid.

reply

Well I think that people who disliked this movie don't know everything! Afterall I think that there are more people that like it more than hate it. This is one of my favorite childhood films. Happy Feet was good but the story I wasn't too crazy about because the story of Happy Feet didn't really make sense. But you know I am 16 years old and I still love this Movie!

reply

I'm 16 too and still love The Pebble and the Penguin.

Happy Feet had a pretty weak story and in the end just tried to pull off a message about the seriousness of Global Warming.

I could barely remember anything of Happy Feet after I saw it, but I can still recall some of the moments from The Pebble and the Penguin and I haven't seen it since I was 8 or 9.

reply

It's so sad too. I babysat for a 3 year old and a 5 year old once and had them watch the pebble and the penguin and the 5 year old said to me "This movie is boring! Can we watch Happy Feet?" I couldn't believe my ears. Of course this is coming from the mouth of a kid who prefers The fox and hound 2 before the first Fox and the Hound.

They kill every book when they turn it into a movie! *begins to weep for the poor books*

reply

I'm not in full support of Happy Feet but The Pebble and the Penguin is a VERY flawed movie. I respect your opinion but it has a lot of problems.

reply

I'm 14 I saw the movie in August and the only thing that I remember is Tim Curry's laughable attempt at singing with an American accent.

Before you ask, no, I'm not saying that Happy Feet is a good movie, but it had songs that I could hum, or that I previously knew about (Somebody to Love).

I think that both movies are bad, but Happy Feet (to me) wins by a feather.

The stamp of mediocrity!

reply

Wow alot of 16 year olds saying they love this movie. I'm 16 too. XD
I say The Pebble and the Penguin is by far better than Happy Feet. I dunno, Happy Feet sort of disgruntled me by how much it was like The Pebble and the Penguin!

Driving me insane, you are.

I liked Happy Feet a bit more. Partly because the music was better, partly because it wasn't made on the cheap (that's no offense to this movie, but it was. Look it up). And then, it was made by George Miller. Sorry, but as much as I like "All Dogs Go to Heaven," I'm gonna like "Mad Max" and "Babe 2" a little bit more.
Listen, the two may be similar, but that's a given. Both are about awkward penguins. It's only right that one referance the other. And, it's not like the storyline is original in itself, in either of the films. Go watch Footloose, or Mask (the one about Rocky Dennis), or any of those. The outsider being accepted isn't ground-breaking. The thing about Happy Feet I like is that it realizes this by the third act and says, "Okay, we've established that. There are more important issues at hand."

But, Pebble's still okay, I guess.

I likes this one MUCH better. My friends and I don't care for or see the big deal about Happy Feet. And dude, it was NOT how the advertised it to be! False advertising right there!
I miss Don Bluth and classic Disney...

reply

Yeah, me too I miss good old Don Bluth and the magic of Walt Disney!

reply

I love them both I have to say, because I love the stories, the music, and everything of both movies that it's hard to decide. Though Happy Feet had incredible animation, i still loved the classic of Don Bluth!

Actually I thought that the Pebble and the Penguin was copying another movie about penguins called the The Adventures of Scamper the Penguin (www.imdb.com/title/tt0098259/). So I would agree that all movies are similar, but if you think about it there's only so much you can do with penguins. The only main difference is both the penguins in Scamper and the Pebble and the Penguin are based on adelie penguins, I believe, while Happy Feet is based on emperor penguins, not that big of a difference, but still. However, I enjoy all three movies, I love penguins!

You are right. It is similar to Happy Feet, and I love both.

I agree w/ Bethany Cox. But I like this movie more. :)

The Pebble and the Penguin was not made "on the cheap": it had a budget of $28 million.

I actually noticed similarities in all four of the animated penguin movies that I own. I'm currently having a little marathon in order of release.

Scamper the Penguin
Pebble & the Penguin
Happy Feet
Surf's Up

They all have a male lead , which I guess isn't that big a similarity. Two of them (Scamper and Happy Feet) follow the lead from hatching to young adulthood. They all leave their homes and meet their new best friends on their journey. They are allunderdogs in a way (everybody loves a good underdog story) and they all get the girl. And in only one of them does the main character not return home (Cody).

There does seem to be a pattern with them. But, that could be said of any movie I s'pose.

It's true that Happy Feet and The Pebble and the Penguin are almost the exact same thing, expect the only difference is is that Hubie was trying to impress Marina with a pebble and the penguins in Happy Feet try to get mates by performing all kinds of love songs. That and Surf's Up got nothing to do with these two just because they're only penguin movies. I'm not gonna choose between them cause The Pebble and the Penguin was one of my favorite Don Bluth classics growing up as a kid, but I also love to watch Happy Feet as well, mostly because I really like Elijah Wood and Robin Williams and I enjoy musical movies a bunch.

reply

Yeah, they are similar. Pebble and the Penguin is far far better. The only thing that I really like about Happy Feet is the music. The plot leaves a lot to be desired. I love how they poked fun at religion (The Great 'Guin) and encouraged awareness of the environment. But there's so many plot holes. Like how did he find his way back?
Pebble and the Penguin is so much better. And the intro song "Now and Forever" is amazing. And I love the music sheets and the penguins when that song is playing.

I watched Pebble and the Penguin ages ago, so when I first saw Happy Feet, I'm ashamed to say that I couldn't remember enough of it to compare. But yeah, I can see now (after watching Pebble yet again) that there are a lot of similarities b/w Happy Feet and Pebble - I have to say I like Happy Feet a bit more... and I couldn't tell you why, because I really love the Pebble and the Penguin too. They're both awesome.

Agreed. :)
I'm 18, and I LOVE this movie! ^_^

But, I also give it a 7/10, pretty much for the same reasons Norman pointed out.

I suppose any two animated penguin films are bound to have things in common, but you're right--there almost HAD to have been some inspiration taken from this for Happy Feet. I LIKE Happy Feet; it's a cute film, but I LOVE The Pebble & the Penguin. That's not even the nostalgia talking--I still genuinely love it, and think it's a great film that holds up well and will always, always be good. And as with most Don Bluth movies, the music is amazing.
