Did anyone else find Drake a bit too over-the-top?

I mean I know he was supposed to be "evil", and I liked that he was voiced by Tim Curry, but his character does spoil the movie for me. His character design WAY too unrealistic for a penguin, and the cape sort of gave him away. I think he would have been a LOT better if he were a more "subtle" kind of evil (like Gaston). Also, for a ladies-man, don't you think that a giant red-cape and an "evil lair" would be just too inconspicuous?

Yeah, he really was. At least he got a good death scene; suprisingly graphic for a G-rated kid's movie.

I agree. I like the film and while I loved the fact that Drake was voiced by the wonderful Tim Curry his character design is I agree unrealistic and Drake has always struck as a little too obvious for a villain, and one of I think most of the least effective Bluth villains(Grand Duke and Carface are somewhat more memorable). He is well voiced and everything and I like Don't Make Me Laugh, but with the lair, the laugh and the cape we kind of know he is a villain. In fact, while I like the movie for especially Rocko and Now and Forever and consider it Bluth's most underrated and better than Troll in Central Park and Thumbelina, the two problems I have always had are Drake's animation and Good Ship Misery, more how it was sung than the song itself.

lol, Drake's design always really bothered me as a kid. I wasn't even sure if he was a penguin or what. He just looks so bizarre and over the top.

He had the body of Ratigan (The Great Mouse Detective) and the personality of Gaston (Beauty and the Beast) and yes he was a bit over the top but in the end he WAS the most memorable part of the movie especially since it was voiced by someone like Tim Curry.

I don't particularly care for his design and he always seemed a bit too obvious for a villain, but he's well voiced and I have a soft spot for Don't Make Me Laugh.

Oh not at all. He's part of the fun of this movie; he's such a blatant Gaston ripoff cranked up to 11, and it is just glorious.

Any movie that freely unleashes the majestic wonder that is Tim Curry is a-okay in my books.
