Q+A with PHILIP RIDLEY + NICK BICAT (London, 4.6.2013)

Savage Cinema Q&A with PHILIP RIDLEY & NICK BICAT (London, 4.6.2013)

"On Tuesday 18th September 2012, Savage Cinema hosted a double bill of THE REFLECTING SKIN (1990) and THE PASSION OF DARKLY NOON (1995) at Roxy Bar & Screen, London as part of the Scala Beyond season. We were honoured to be joined by writer-director Philip Ridley (The Krays, Heartless) and music composer Nick Bicat for an interview and Q&A after the films. The interview was moderated by Savage Cinema's James Flower."

Interesting interview (38min.):

Philip Ridley called "The Passion of Darkly Noon"(1995)a "fable about fundamentalism" told through the eyes and mind of the religious lead character Darkly Noon.
Ridley says he's not interested in the 'realism' or 'naturalism' that dominates British Cinema because he sees it as a limited approach to representing reality. He says, he is more interested in creating 'dreamscapes' in his films that follow their own 'dream logic'. [I guess this makes him a type of surrealist.]

The story for "...Darkly Noon"(1995) was inspired by a small cult in Alberta/ Canada that Ridley saw while shooting "The Reflecting Skin"(1990) there.
The Waco siege 1993 might have been an inspiration, too.
Philip Ridley thinks that the film's themes have more resonance since 9/11.

Nice find. Thanks for sharing! I wish he would make more films.

I miss Ridley, too.

He had great talent, no doubt.

He should do a low-budget feature where he has total creative control.

Maybe with Viggo again ?
