Has anyone noticed....

this movie does not come on TV like Menace II Society, Boyz in Da Hood, Belly, New Jack City, etc. TBS, TNT, USA or BET plays at least 2 of these movies every month...why not a POSITIVE black movie about the struggle and achievement of the Black community back in the 60's??

Coincidence?? I think not....

reply

I first saw it here (UK) on TV 4 or 5 years ago although that was a late late night slot (2AM). I only recorded it by accident, the tape kept recording after I recorded Serpico. I'm glad I did though, interesting film.

You named all the channels owned by the enemy brother like Bet is owned by viacom, and of course their not going to show Panther its to black but nothing can be too white.

Preach on, my Brotha!!!

Let's make a list of every black movie/TV show that's not easily available and/or affordable to the public:

Panther
The Man (James Earl Jones as 1st Black President)

Help me out, y'all! Add some titles to the list that you know for sure are really hard to get. Let's see what we can do about it!

Aww man I'm soo upset!!! We don't have that channel and I looovee that movie so muchand I had to search high and low for it on youtube cuz no one has it on dvd or vhs anywhere!! Man it pisses me off seriously!!! Dang I wish someone had it!!

reply

I think it is not shown because the government was wrong with flooding the ghettos with cheap drugs, and cointelpro was real.

They showed Soul Plane, many times. And by your standards that was bad (box office success). Plus that's not necessarily true, stations show movies that bombed all the time.

You're cute in a Quasimodo kind of way.

reply

I saw it on tv over the weekend, it's incredible.

This movie is no longer in print. I doubt anyone knew when it was originally released that the MANUFACTURERS would stop printing it. It isn't the studios its the manufacturers. You can possibly buy someone elses if they're selling them on amazon or ebay but 99% of the time they are being sold at some astronomical price.

All I know is the movie is on HBO this month so if you have the means then you need to record it. Ibe been telling everyone they need to record it-dub it-and share it.

The movie came out in '95 so you can imagine how many people will never see this movie. Please everyone record this and share it.

Almost everything on TV sucks. That's beside the point. The author of this thread was pointing out that the movie has a positive message, despite it being bad. So, TV shows negative crap, instead of positive crap. That's the point. Why not show it? Because politics don't sell like gangs and sex do. And, that's the best case scenario as to why a station like BET, that claims to be black entertainment, doesn't show a movie like Panther. I don't even want to bring up the worst case scenario.

reply

Hey, Quite Storm, Soul Plane is on BET as I'm typing this. It sorta sucks... And it's on. So why not run Panther after it?

reply

It's been running on HBO lately. Just watched it. That's why I'm here.

Far as BET not running it, to make way for it's usual tittytainment? That's a no brainer. BET's owned by Viacom. BET is no longer black owned. Hasn't been for a decade. People who have no concern for the black community whatsoever choose BET's programming.

You just killed your point with a snide remark about me going to watch "Soul Plane." If you know me like most do on the boards do, you would know that I am a film professional working inside Hollywood with an undying love for story, especially film storytelling. If I don't like the film I trash it. Simple. No bias here. My criticisms are always from someplace objective.

Now, you're right. The powers that be are leaning towards films like "Soul Plane" because, to be frank, that's all black audiences seem to gravitate to and Hollywood relies on black dollars to support black films. If we seem to only respond to Tyler Perry then that's what they'll give us. More Soul Planes, more Madea Goes to Jails, more crap.

And I knew both "Soul Plane" and "Panther" was on at the same time. I watched Panther mostly, but when I got bored of all the preachy, unrealistic dialogue and the amateurish execution in directing (Panther), I flipped to "Ratatouille," a film that is vastly superior to them both.

And by the way, no one is a bigger critic of BET than me.

LOL, quiet storm, you call yourself a film professional working inside hollywood, with the power to "trash" scripts, and then refer to OTHERS as "the powers that be".

It just so happens I've worked in hollywood too, storm. and while i may not have made it to script reader, there's one thing I have learned...whenever someone says that they're just making what audiences are willing to watch, they are full of SHYT!!. The studios are saying that about reality t.v., but the real reason they're putting that garbage out there is because it costs next to NOTHING to produce. About the cost of a camera crew. You don't even have to pay the talent. Heck, there IS NO TALENT, other than some host who's only some b list celeb desperate for any gig (Paula Abdul...).

Panther would probably get twice the viewers as Soul Plane. The best case scenario is that it would cost them more to get the rights to air Panther, so they're just being cheap. I don't even want to get into the worst case scenario. But your reasoning that black people will only watch Soul Plane or Madea? Nonsense. Not any black people I know, and most black people I know are poor.

reply

Hey Quiet Storm, guess what BET had on the other night? Lean On Me. Last I checked, that's not a Tyler Perry movie, nor is it even a comedy. It's a rather conservative, anti-union, anti Democrat story about a high school principal who has to hurdle corrupted Democratic politicians and labor unions to clean up his school. So don't tell me BET avoids political movies and just likes to feed the lowest denominator with raunchy comedies. If BET put up a poll on their website, asking viewers if they'd rather see "Lean on Me", or "Panther", what do you think would win out?

reply

@Robsac

Sure the high school principal's efforts worked in real life somewhat, but only to an extent---he obviously meant well, but if you do some research on the real story, the truth is he ended up alienating not only some of his staff and the kids, but even some parents with his high-handed authortarian ways, and he wound up getting transferred out of the school. So his story didn't have the Hollywood ending the movie probably had (I've never seen the film, but had the soundtrack, which was pretty good---plus I've never had one that had a rap and a gospel version of the main song---that was different/interesting!) Also the school's problems had nothing to do with unions or Democrats, so get out of here with that despicable conservative I-hate-everybody-who-isn't-Republican-one-sided mindset that hasn't really solved too many of this nation's problems, any damn way.
