Why does Casey die?

For the life of me i don't understand. He gets a tiny rip in his suit, so that mean that two inches of his thigh gets exposed. How is that enough for him to become infected,i don't see how it could have gone into his blood stream from that.
He couldn't really have breathed it in or anything. I might have missed something. Confusing :(

Agree. Meanwhile the little girls with the mom who was infected were just a few feet away from each other, been living in the same space for a while and not infected.

We don't know if her family became infected. I imagine that they did but the purpose of the scene was to make us care for one of the victims rather than seeing all the people in the town as collateral damage. We didn't get to see everyone's fate as that would have been too morbid and would have made the film stupidly long.

As for the tear being enough to infect him, I have trouble believing that too. He immediately rushed out and I imagine he would have held his breath and slowly exhaled. There is no way air containing the virus could have moved through the suit and reached his mouth and nose that quickly.

Not to mention the type of hazmat suit he was wearing would have precluded infection.
