Nudity - AWESOME :P

Lol, we had to watch this in school and I didn't know there was nudity in it. We knew it was rated R but that was fricken awesome.

Don't know how realistic it was though. When Desdemona is undressing for her
honeymoon, her elaborate brocaded gown just slips off (almost without prompting)
and fall to the floor. Clothes were so elaborate then, and later on ("Unpin
me here, pray") she needs Emilia's help to disrobe for her bath.

The Augustan poet Alexander Pope (d.1743) even made a joke about this. He
wrote: "Even if the lady says yes, the dress says no."

reply

Maybe she'd already had help getting most of it off, with Emilia? Anyway, we all know that in filmed sex scenes, clothes just... melt away!

reply

It's truly bizarre that Americans believe a single breast to be worthy of an "R" rating.

reply

Thats one of the bad parts of our country.

Rating system makes no sense.

Violence in PG 13
Nudity in R

When I get older I'd much rather have my kids looking at porn than killing people.

"When I get older I'd much rather have my kids looking at porn than killing people."

Completely unfair comparison. You should say you'd rather have your kids looking at porn than looking at fictional displays of killing people.

Fictional displays of sex:fictional displays of killing people.

As if you've never seen a tit before....

Wow, you were watching one of the greatest plays written in the English language and all you could think about were Desdemona's boobs. You're really mature.

It's always cool when you see a movie in high school English class, and there's nudity or sex in it. Like when we watched that old, 1970's version of Romeo and Juliet (the one with Michael York), Juliet had a scene where she was completely nude. I'm sitting here, in school, and all of a sudden I'm looking at a naked young woman. Take into consideration that I was only 15 and hadn't had sex yet, and my pecker got hard at the drop of a hat, I was thanking my lucky stars that the lights were off so no one would see that bulge in my pants lol

I fully appreciate the works of Shakespeare, and enjoy them for their own sake. But there's just something so cool and... naughty about seeing boobs in school :-)

If you're criticizing teenage boys for raving about seeing boobs (in SCHOOL, no less) then you were obviously never a teenage boy.

But yeah, same thing happened with Brannagh's Hamlet. Kate Winslett naked in English class. Hoo yeah.

Totally unrelated - why is it that Kate Winslett's always showing her boobies? I admit they look very nice. On another note, I haven't seen Kate Winslett in a few years, so maybe her boobs don't look as good any more.

So tell me, somoone that knows, please: How fare the fair Winslett's boobs?

There's a reason why stories like that are usually meant to stay in the mind.

This time, Effie White's gonna win.

Whitney was wrong. Children are no longer the future.

Olivia Hussey as Juliet in "Romeo & Juliet" (1968) has no nude scene. There is a quick glimpse of a breast as she turns on her side. We do get full "backal" nudity of Leonard whiting as Romeo. So, you must have had a very good imagination to translate Leonard's beautiful body into Olivia's. What an introduction to the male form! I was a very shy and sheltered girl, and, back then, nudity was not as common in films and elsewhere as it is now. I thought that he looked like a perfect sculpture that had come to life.

Watch the film again. It's completely worthwhile, being THE best version of this story and starring two young actors who were closer to the ages of Shakespeare's couple than in other productions. I've been in love with this exquisite film for 40 years, since the first time I saw it in the theater.

As for nudity in "Othello", I actually have no memory of it, so it must not have made an impression. Perhaps I was paying too much attention to the play, not the disrobing.

Leonard is an exception!

It wasn't so much nudity as Othello's mind taking flight in a jealous fantasy of Desdemona and Cassio. You saw hands stroking legs or arms or back, but in such quick shots it was sometimes hard to see what was being stroked and who was stroking whom. The only really overtly sexual shot was a XCU of their mouths close to each other with a tongue beginning to move towards a french kiss ( I would guess). It was more the combination of shots and the titillating manner in which they were both shot and edited together that showed Othello's mind at work and suggested even more to both him and us. It was a very sexy interlude though, I agree.
