Am I only one who finds the protagonist's actions unconscionable?

They con two innocent people into stealing a government aircraft and flying over what they know is hostile territory. They even tell them not to ask for clearance from the tower which means running the risk of an air disaster. They display a callous disregard for the lives of their own people just so they can soothe their own consciences.
