What if the baby can see?

Yeah, i bet all babies see a big penis coming toward them when thier parents are making love during pregnancy. Guess that's why kids are what they are when they grow up, traumatized.

Seriously, i don't get some screenwriters. That was just the stupidest scene in the entire film.

reply

Well, the entire film was stupid. Embarrasing to see Moore stoop to this level, when she easily could outact Grant and are worthy of a script with much more "body" to it.

reply

I No Julianne Moore is my all time fav actress, so it was a bit embarrasing to see her at this level, but i did think that she played giving birth well, and this was the first movie that i have ever seen her in, so i suppose it was ok, but just no that up tp scratch

reply

Haha, I actually thought that was the funniest part! It's just a funny movie, I don't think it should be taken seriously. :-P

reply

I thought so, too. As a "been there, done that" 60-something lady with a hubby who reveals his feelings, I could easily understand the thought processes of both him and her in that scene. She had unrealistic fears for the baby, as most first-time mothers-to-be do; and he had gone soooo long without a fun roll in the hay that to be promised it, then denied it, is extremely frustrating. Both actors played that scene very, very well. I loved the mad dash from the bistro to their bedroom, and Hugh's hurried, though clumsy, efforts to disrobe. I laughed so hard.

reply

Yeah, when she asks Sam if the baby could see I found it so ridiculous.

reply

Actually, a lot of expectant parents worry about what the baby can see and feel in the womb, and don't know sex is safe until a doctor tells them or they read about it on their own. And some feel it's somehow "dirty" even if it is medically safe, so the scene really isn't that much of a stretch at all.

reply

This movie is hilarious for anyone who's given birth/has children.

Wasn't Sam a psychiatrist? He seemed contrivedly ignorant of general medicine and pregnancy knowledge....

(And FWIW, the cervix would block any scary images.)

reply

And the esophagus.

reply

haha where do you think dimples come from?

reply

^^ Funniest. Comment. Ever.

reply

Yeah! Good one!

reply

Um... not to mention that it would be DARK in there.

I thought the scene was brilliant. It highlighted their cluelessness at having a child, and gave use further insight into how Samuel could percieve the baby as ruining his life.

I was wondering the same thing. Even though he wasn't an OB-GYN, he seemed to have some knowledge of medical terms and other things when it was convenient for the film. Yet he didn't know that birth control wasn't 100% effective and didn't know enough to tell Rebecca that the baby would not be able to see anything if they had sex. Obviously, he was really horny and desperate for sex, so if he had known that, he would have told her - so it's obvious he didn't know jack.

RESPECT MY AUTHORITAH! - Eric Cartman

reply

Was that established? He might've been a psychologist, so the medical training would've been less.

reply

I read something about babies getting hard-ons while in the womb and they can masturbate... so... i wouldn't worry about a baby seeing it

well to me there was not anything much funnier than the hospital scene and all of the mis-used words Robin's character had said....Very funny! (TBS!)

reply

The scene is meant to be humorous. And I thought Julianne & Grant executed it perfectly. I loved it. Favorite scene in the entire film.

reply

hahaha i just loved thi movie!

you must be an angel...

reply

my favourite part of this scene was that Hugh Grants character was expecting sex and got NOTHING!! Shut down Hugh!

What made the scene so funny was that so many pregnant couples go through that same thought process. As a mother myself, I'm talking from personal experience. Many men think they will hurt the baby, and women are so uncomfortable anyway while pregnant, that they sometimes wonder themselves. So, although Julianne's reaction might have seemed a little ridiculous to some people, I understood it completely! It was an honest fear, over-exaggerated for comic appeal. I laughed so hard because many of us have experienced similar reactions, but may not tell anyone else about it.

As a mother of 5 I have to say this is a worry for parents. Sounds dumb but its true. All it proves is that whoever the screenwriters are at least they know about having babies and the "stupid" worries parents have.

reply

Absolutely agree with emtee73... When I was pregnant I had a lot of different things going through my mind and I was worried like I've never been before. That is just the way it is when women are pregnant for the first time... its natural.

reply

I wouldnt say "this is a worry for parents", I would say "this is a worry for SOME parents". I cant imagine a lot of people would be concerned about this, after all do we remember our parents penises coming towards us when we were in womb?

But it is not uncommon for people to have irrational silly fears during pregnancy and to get overprotective. I agree that the fear is silly, but its not strange for someone to feel this way.
