As the memory of Nico fades...

When I was a kid, I listened to the Velvet Underground Records and adored Nico's solo songs:

I'll Be Your Mirror
All Tomorrow's Parties
Femme Fatale
Chelsea Girl
These Days

I looked at photos of her mesmerizing beauty & hoped I somehow one day might look like her, knowing I probably would not.

Nico was a powerful image for a young girl. Over time she became quite famous. As I began to hear about her dalliances with Brian Jones & Jim Morrison, i tried to imagine what her life was like. Imagine my disappointment to find she was a heroin addict and a disappointing live performer. When I was a kid and fell in love with her songs, I had never heard of heroin or addiction or any such things. I just loved her voice and the way she looked and sang.

Later on in life. I met many musicians and a lot of performers who told me many stories about her they got first hand or heard about her in the years until her death.

I saw the documentary about her and discovered that during her escapades among the jet set of Europe, Nico had hung around and did a small role in "La Dolce Vita" with Fellini, and she'd met and conceived a child with Alain Delon whom he did not want to acknowledge...although Ari looks like the identical twin of his father. It made me less envious to hear about the details of her ragged personal life. However, that explained the little boy who was on the cover of her solo album Desertshore.

What really gets to me is that I realize from reading the few posts about her that when my age group dies off, most likely memories of Nico will die off. I seriously doubt her music will last more than one more generation.

I really loved those songs, and her recordings of them. Time moves on though, doesn't it?

Not necessarily. As long as that association with the Velvet Underground is known, some of her music will live on, at least.

reply

Hope so. I love those songs.
