How does the book compare to Confederacy?

I'm reading dunces at the minute and really like it. Is the neon bible anywhere near as good? I heard that he wrote it when he was 16 and never intended to publish it.

the neon bible is entirely different than confederacy, but equally as beautiful and really outstanding when you consider it was written by a 16 year old boy. really accomplished, but very southern, flannery o'connor, faulkner-esque. worth a read!

I agree - the book fits right into the Southern Gothic tradition best exemplified by O'Connor, Faulkner, and Capote.

I first read "Confederacy" about 25 years ago (!!!). I absolutely loved it. This was the first book that I read that caused me to laugh out loud. To this day, I can open "Confederacy" to any page and start reading. "Confederacy" captures the New Orleans "Y'at" personality so perfectly.

Years later (early 1990s??), I read "The Neon Bible". While I generally enjoyed the experience of reading "Neon Bible", it was nothing like "Confederacy".

Hope this helps.
