A French gentleman has no regard for another's marriage

Monsieur Arnaud asks Nelly two questions about her marital status: "Are you still married?" and "Are you happy?" And he proceeds to win her affection and loyalty. I guess this is the French attitude toward someone else's marriage. Does Monsieur Arnaud not think that his affluence, social status, cultural sophistication, and gentlemanly attitude to a much younger and beautiful woman can take her affection, whatever is left, away from her husband?

Because one character in one movie has that attitude, that means that it is the attitude of an entire country?

What's your gripe? Pierre behaves as a gentleman throughout, laying only one tentative hand upon Nelly at the very end and calling her always by the polite «vous». Though married in law, he has been separated from his wife Lucie for 20 years. When he meets Nelly, her marriage is at an end. Her husband Jérôme has got a new girl and wants a divorce. Though both Pierre and Nelly are technically married to others, their hearts are free.

In fact, you could argue that it is Pierre's delicacy towards Nelly, who he undoubtedly adores, which drives him to agree his estranged wife's request that the two go to see their son in Seattle. Pierre doesnt care a bit for either, but it gets him away from his growing obsession. And always in his mind, we can surmise, is the powerful hope that when he comes back to his apartment he will find Nelly at the desk.

And when we see how Pierre's wife bullies him, we realise how soft he is with women. Rather than him attempting to seduce Nelly, isnt the film about how far she takes advantage of a lonely old man?
