Was he really the devil? How the hell did he survive that heroin shot to the neck?

I seen this movie so long ago and all this time I believed he was the devil, until now. Rewatching it, I'm not so sure anymore. He just seems like someone lucky enough to survive a dose of drugs through the neck, and maybe a shotgun blast. But not a good old hacking, I guess.

Remember the part he tells the junkie couple about the time he O'D'd and was technically dead only to have come "back to life" out of his coma?...

He comes back to life in the MORGUE, no less! (at least if I recall correctly!)

Despite this being a bit of foreshadowing, like the scene where he nods out, but swiftly recuperates to awareness and mobility in time to escape the barricaded bathroom and foil his erstwhile capturer's escape, I think the conversation he had with the "junkie couple" also demonstrates that he may have had an extremely high tolerance to his intravenous drug(s) of choice.
