Blood in Blood out, although a damn good chicano movie, is not as great as My Family....My Family makes me proud to be mexican. Viva la Raza unida!

reply

Blood in Blood out is a far better movie. There are too many moving parts in My Family.

I liked My family... but i thought that it was kinda scatter brained. I didn't feel like there was any resolution or clear ending... it just ended.

No no no no no way La Bamba is a better movie than My Family or BIBO. I would say it is better than American Me - I don't know, something about that movie has always rubbed me the wrong way. Back to La Bamba - Ritchie was a little a$$hole in a lot of scenes, but Bob shines in that movie - he made La Bamba.

I really like your car Mrs. Larusso!

La Bamba is a great one. I think I like My Family best (even though lower budget), the ensemble cast is very fun. I haven't seen Blood In/Out (will have to check it out).

I also recommend The Border, El Norte, maybe even Zoot Suit

reply

la bamba is good, but i don't think it compares to mi familia, bound by honor, or even american me...just my opinion tho. el norte, as you recommended, is a great movie too, starring a young enrique castillo lol. i've always wanted to see zoot suit but never found it at any video store on vhs or dvd. isn't that a musical of sorts? i remember seeing the previews but never watched the movie.

a highly overlooked/underrated chicano film which i think is great, and was very inspirational to me (even if the film embellished the story), is stand and deliver. i believe it came out about the same time/year as la bamba.

in any case, i like mi familia and bound by honor just about equally. both are great stories and are written pretty well.

Stand and Deliver is a great one. "You burros have math in your blood!" Inspirational to me, and I'm a white guy. Olmos has done some great work, including Zoot Suit (don't know why its rated low). The Border is another oldie but favorite. Elpedia Carrillo is in it too (Jimmy Smits' girlfriend/wife in Mi Familia). She's such a beauty. I'll have to check out Bund by Honor.

reply

yeah, olmos did a great job in stand & deliver as jaime escalante (he died recently too, pretty sad). lou diamond phillips was good as angel guzman too. altho the movie was embellished a bit, like you, it was very inspirational to me also (i'm 1/2 mexican). i was in junior high when that came out and literally went from c's & d's in basic math all thru elementary school, to a's & b's in algebra. kinda funny considering i was always told "if you don't get basic math, you'll never understand algebra".

bound by honor is "blood in blood out", just in case you weren't aware. why they gave it 2 titles (or such a long title) is beyond me. it's a great one, runs about 3hrs. american me is good too. both are more or less centered around prison/gangs, more so the latter tho. check 'em out when you can!

BIBO hands down...if for nothing else the sheer amount of quotes and the hilarious overacting. Love the movie. Mi Familia is much more serious, at least in terms of acting and plot. It's more like a slice of real life, whereas BIBO is more of a movie.
