BACON'S FINEST HOUR

THAT BACON WAS NOT EVEN NOMINATED FOR AN OSCAR, WAS A CRIME. HIS PERF WAS
THE BEST OF HIS CAREER, AND MOST SKILLED. ONE OF THE GREAT ACADEMY BLUNDERS,
TO HAVE IGNORED THIS POWERFUL PERFORMANCE.

reply

That is one thing I can and do agree with. Kevin Bacon was superb.

jreeb, agreed...and to mention the previous thread about the movie being a big lie...I am disappointed and do agree with your point of view. BUT had I watched a film about the actual events that occurred, I wouldn't have rooted for Henri like I did in this version....basically, I think the whole problem is the issuing of a license to be able to say that anything was based on, loosely based on, inspired by a true...WHATEVER...like a beautiful mind, perfect storm, and all the others. The requirement should be to tell the story about the subject as accurately as possible...then possibly add small characters/plot lines that may enhance that true story, but NOT manipulate it. I think it is absurd to be able to put the word "true" in any movie where the whole story is twisted except for names.

But i liked the flick....and I have a new respect for Bacon

even though he looks like skeletor

I sat down and watched this film again after almost a decade and I was spellbound. The first thing I thought was wow, not even a nomination??!!. This is one of my all time greatest performances. Mind blowing.

For entertainment purposes only. With a grain of truth.

This was the finest acting performance I have ever witnessed by any actor ever! I happened to catch it on TV one night, long after it was in the theatres and looked it up on IMDB, certain that Kevin had received critical acclaim and certainly an Oscar nomination if not the prize itself. To find out that the film was IGNORED... just blew me away. Unforgiveable! He should be given one post ceremoniously!

reply

Lots of amazing acting in this film.

I'm going to post here because it seems to be less contentious than other threads.

I think I only watched the movie because it claimed to be a "fact-based tale". I enjoy "true crime" stories, but not so much plain old drama. And immediately after being totally absorbed for two and a half hours, I came on-line to find out more about this sad young man who was so brutalized by "the system". I was therefore quite disappointed to find that probably the only "facts" were the guy's name, that he was at Alcatraz, and he did kill at least one man at some point.

So I'm torn. I'm unhappy that my emotional investment was falsely enhanced by the claims that it was "fact-based". But I'm also glad that I watched a very entertaining and superbly made film.

What's the answer then? I really don't know. I guess it's just good that we have the internet to do our research and find out the truth when we want to. And yes, there are some folks for whom that is not a necessity. And I think they should be allowed the opportunity to ignore the facts. Ignorance is a choice one makes, just as knowledge is a choice others make.

jreed, I really appreciate your knowledge, but, if I may, I don't believe you've been allowing others to "choose ignorance", and should give some of those folks a break, like they should be doing to you, of course.

To 'GoodNiteIrene'

Yours is one of the very finest posts I have read on imdb (over a few years), and I can not possibly add anything more. Thank you..

reply

Absolutley. How does this performance not get nominated. Ouch.

I thought this was one of the most powerful performances I have ever seen in cinema and am glad others recognize this. Belated Bravo Kevin another academy bungle

reply

he was very very good, yes,
BUT it wasn't flawless, maybe it was the 1-2 scenes
that changed the academy's mind...

for example, where he is allowed to go out after 2 years,
and he thinks he can go into the normal jail now,
and they say him he has to stay another year,
that "nooo" and the reaction was ridiculous, at least together
with the german dubbing LOL

Chuck Norris: "No!" - End of scene

I rank this as one of the ten best acting performances I've ever seen. I'm not surprised that he wasn't nomintated for an Oscar. They are a complete joke anyway and have no merit whatsoever.

Kevin Bacon is def one of the best actors I've ever seen. This is his finest performance ever.

"2 times 2"
"Joe DiMagio"
"I'm talking bout Alcatraz"

lol

Bacon's performance here, and Val Kilmer as Jim Morrison in The Doors Movie, are two of the biggest Oscar snubs in the history of motion pictures!
And that's all I have to say about that!

reply

Agreed. Also, Eddie Murphy as the Nutty Professor.

reply

You have GOT to be kidding me. How would you react to that situation? He thought he was out of that misery, just to have his happiness smothered with darkness and despair within one minute. Did you want him to just look down at the ground?

What is wrong with people?

Yes, well, dubbing destroys any performance.

i have to agree, his perfrormance, commitment, courage in the role is was what acting is all about.
i watched this man give his all....he is one of the great's of our time...let's not have to say that in his obiturary 40 years from now.. and the rest of the cast...oldman...comeon...one of the best!!
kevin is truly a creative...an artist and///an artist couple that (krya) rocks)...that has their head's on tight....not easy to do nowadays..
keep it up you two!!! keep away from the noise!
peace

reply

Well, the movie wasn't liked that much and it came out in January so it's understandable that he didn't get a nom.

reply

i agree 101% with the OP. kevin's preformance was his best ever!! the academy is useless though. they are all political and only nominate what the majority of viewers and young people watch. if all the award shows were honest and fair, then kevin would be getting nominated for just about every role he's done.

I'd have to disagree. I didn't find Bacon's character believable. Now, if he were to have played a mentally challenged person, maybe. And of course, I have no idea what 3 years of solitary confinement will do to a mind, but he was acting more... autistic than anything else.

reply

A superior piece of acting. He had to try hard to out perform Gary Oldman.
