Changing the name

I wonder why, almost a year after the Kennedy assassination (as the diegetic radio tells us), they are only just getting around to changing the name of the school.
At the beginning of the film, the school name is partly changed. The remaining letters are on the ground, waiting to be hauled up. They are doing this on the first day of school.
Seems like poor planning, especially given that the school is run by some quite pedantic, meticulous people at that time.

I imagine there's a period of "mourning" protocol to follow between an assassination and the naming of a school, ship, whatever. So you have six months of mourning, a school board meeting, a proposal, an approval, an incorporation into the budget and then the manufacture of the letters for the school. Then they start mounting the letters at the beginning of the new year.

This may have been the final task of the transformation. They probably had to change letterheads, rubber stamps, litho plates, book labels, the card holders in the library books, etc. Really, that wasn't that long of a wait. I'd imagine it would take a lot longer these days.
