this was a really competitive year for best actor. I honestly thought Anthony Hopkins deserved it for his portrayal of Richard Nixon.

reply

First of all, he already had an Oscar. Second, Cage's performance was more daring, playing a suicidal drunk.

reply

Nic Cage deserved the Oscar, I couldn't get the movie out of my head for days after. I saw Mr. Holland years later

reply

either him or Sean Penn should've gotten it.

"Charming company you keep."

reply

Well, they gave it to Cage instead of Penn because they knew they were giving Susan Sarandon Best Actress for Dead Man Walking and they wanted to spread the awards around. But remember, neither Walking nor Vegas got Best Picture nods. Shame on the stupid Academy for this!

reply

neither did this film. I don't understand how it didn't though. Academy really *beep* up in '95.

reply

It had to do with Washington criticizing Hollywood so they probably chickened out in choosing great pictures that year and played it safe. Same crap happened in 2000.

reply

I totally agree. This is one of the most amazing movies I've ever seen. I still go gooey at the eyeballs when Olympia says to Richard "Of all the teachers Mr Holland...you were my favourite".

Oh stop I'm dripping now.

Absolutely agree. This was his best performance, and the movie in general is just amazing. The ending always gets me, when he goes to the auditorium and everyone is there waiting for him.
