Question about Cole's hearing lost.

Was he born deaf, or was it the fire truck horn that damaged his hearing? And isnt it true that children in a loud public place should wear ear covers?

reply

He was Born deaf, the mother could tell because he wasn't reacting to the fire truck horn, if it were the fire truck horn that made him deaf, then he would have had a bigger reaction, and yes children and pretty much anyone SHOULD wear ear covers in loud places but really who gives a f0ck?

reply

You get ONE set of ears - if you screw them up by listening to sounds that are too loud (see http://www.nidcd.nih.gov/health/hearing/ruler.asp), you will not be able to hear the same way again.

Hearing aids are simply that - AIDS. They can't restore "normal" hearing to damaged ears... so protect what you have! Wear earplugs, turn down music, or avoid loud situations altogether.

Thank you, osu the audiologist. It used to always piss me off to get into someone's car and have them blast the damn stereo. To me, that's like punching me in the gut. Some friend!

It kills me to no end that my mother, a severe lover of music and especially harmony, is unable to hear the music properly any more. Sure, she gave me her music collection, but I'd give it all back if she could hear it again. Such a waste. It's no different than being a lover of art and going colorblind.

Is your other car really a DeLorean? I own one as well.

reply

Awww I'm sorry to hear that. That is something me and my dad talked about a while ago that we would hate to loose our hearing. Me and my dad love music. I probably would be ok with going blind, or losing any other senses, but my hearing...nope.

Every year in the Fourth of July parade we have all the local fire trucks and they ALL have their sirens going. It is very painful live and I've not gone to see parades for this reason. Though I am not deaf or hard of hearing (I do have ringing in my ears for as long as I can remember), I am very sensitive to loud noises and avoid it as much as possible.

reply

I always thought he was born deaf.

Because in the scene where Mr. Holland is explaining to the class how Beethoven wrote his symphonies, the kid asked how Beethoven knew what the notes even were, if he was deaf, and Mr. Holland answered "... well, Beethoven wasn't born deaf.." the look on his face showed that he was realizing the magnitude of his son's disability- that he would never hear or understand music, because he had been born deaf.

reply

If it had been the fire truck would they be able to sue the fire department?

reply

He was born deaf, which is why in the scene where Holland is talking about Beethoven and says that line in a sad way, it is because he knows his own son was born that way.

reply

It's Mr. Holland playing music to him in utero that makes him be born deaf.

Not really, but wouldn't that suck for Holland?
