Mr. holland is kind of a douche

I love this movie and It makes me cry every time.

That being said, I'm thrilled we get to know Mr. Holland on a deeply personal basis, because otherwise, on the surface, he's a mean dad and miserable teacher who nearly had an affair with one of his students.

reply

At first he's not a great dad But he warms to it--- that deafness thing was not a easy situation to throw one in now even worse in the early 60s

Nearly doesn't count

get over yourself

You don't have to stand tall, but you have to stand up!

reply

How is he a douche if you like the film and you like to get to know him on a personal basis? I think you are screwed up.

reply

Almost definitely counts.

reply

He makes a difference despite being a flawed human being. Despite the personal inconvenience he is often grumpy about, his `better angles' normally guide him in the right direction.

reply

Even the Bible says there is a line between temptation and deed. Are you setting yourself up as the chief judge of everyone else's morals.

I'll take the Bible's teaching over your opinions any day.

Mr. Holland's Doucheness

reply

Neither Mr. Holland or his wife were very good parents since they had no idea their kid was deaf until he was like a year old. Seriously they never noticed the kid was deaf before the fire engine blaring scene?

reply

Before that they just thought he was a dick.crappy twinThe shrink made the engineer cry.

reply

The kid wasn't born deaf, and the Doc after the Fire Engine incident said he had lost 90% of his hearing, so 10% were still there at that time.

reply

I think pompous is a better categorization, he felt he was above teaching, wasn't really interested in it, until he humbled himself and learned that it had a lot to offer. Generally, that was the point of the movie.
