The present Govenor was in his Class and the music program was cut?

She also found it to be a beneficial part of her life, as she showed up at his party. She couldn't have persuaded the State to throw a little more funding at the very program that had such an impact on her, but instead allowed it to fail?

reply

There was literally no money left. Everyone had to make cuts. Music and art is very important but at the end of the day stuff like science and math is more important and if you have pick between the two then math and science is going to win every time. My point is that because there was no extra money, her hands were tied.

reply

I love music, but would have cut it if I had to choose between the three R's and music.

reply

That also annoyed me.

And anything in USA out of money? cmon!

(if anything, steal some more from Brasil)

reply

If a federal program needs funding, they just print more money and let the taxpayers deal with it.

State governments don't have that option.

That's the worse way possible of finding money. A serious government will just consider that not an option.

reply

I think that comment was tongue in cheek.

reply

A darn shame.

It's that man again!!

reply

This was ironically (as far as I remember) Happening a lot to a lot of schools in the 90's music and art programs getting cut

reply

This would have made the movie believable then.

reply

That bothered me as well, she should've made an effort to try and find the funds somehow, even through private donors or something.

But, it's something we see in actual life, where people destroy bridges after they themselves have crossed them.

I remember a controversy during this election cycle, where Marco Rubio had proposed legislation which - had it passed - would've made it impossibile for his own parents to come to the US now, as they had come back in the day. His response was: it was another time, and they're already here (subtext: who cares about those that follow).

She wasn't the one that made the decision to cut music. The state gets money from the federal government for schools as well as their own funds. For whatever reason the funds for that district weren't enough to keep everything so they had to cut stuff. The governor wasn't saying "F you, I got mine" in this case which is what your story at the bottom there was basically all about. The point is that she couldn't take the time to save one school's music program just because she went there.

reply

Music programs were being cut all over the state. Why should one particular school district get money from the state, just because the governor went to that school?

reply

Exactly. I don't get what is so hard to understand for certain people. I was in band and I loved doing that and I believe that stuff like music, art and drama and all that other stuff is important. It makes for a well rounded education and more importantly can help kids find their passions but if the money isn't there then the money isn't there. You can't expect a school to say "yeah, we'll keep music and cut science"

reply

I think some people forget that money doesn't grow on trees, and what they are proposing is that the governor use TAXPAYERS' money for this. Why should taxpayers from the opposite end of the state pay for this one particular district's music program? If it was important enough to the locals, they would fund it.

There are those who are trying to chip away at the science curriculum already and continue to do so.

reply

Well, you have to realize that she probably did feel very bad about it, but what could she do about it? Just because she was the Governor and knew Mr. Holland as one of her former teachers, she can't play favorites. She is not Donald Trump. I think the speech she gives to him at the end is sort of saying she was sorry about this but the fact that he has done a lot for this town and community and will be remembered for that.

reply

she also has legislature to deal with. We don't know what their needs are. We don't know what other issues the district has to deal with.

Bear in mind too that even though she is the governor, she does not have total power over the budget. The state can veto any bill (including budget) she signs by mere vote.

She does not get to decide everything on her own. She and her administration has to work with the legislature. If she did, they would remove her. Either that or the voters would remove her.

School districts probably have the ultimate say in what gets saved or cut within their schools. There was not much details about reasons for the cut. Decreased participation? Who knows. It’s left ambiguous, but it’s probably a nod to current school districts that are now having to cut funds in any way they can. And music often gets cut in situations like this.
