He's a high school music teacher who was never good enough to make it to the big leagues. Why on earth would you expect the music he produces to be amazing or masterful!?!? The fact that his opus is only subpar is an important aspect of the character.

Im not sure why they think its bad. Personally movie or not I think its a decent piece of music....And considering that its being heard for the first time performed by kids and likely hobbyists...its not as if there was time for Mr. Holland to change certain parts.
