What's the deal with Kitana?

I didn't understand her story... how is she 10k years old? Were her people supposed to be immortal or something? And why exactly is she just roaming around Shang Tsung's island the whole time? And they said Shao Khan adopted her to claim the throne to outworld, but why did he need to do that?

He turned the place into a dump, does it really matter if he has the throne or not? Also if he adopted her to claim the throne, why didn't he just kill her afterwards? He'd still have the throne if he did.

I liked this movie, but that plot point just made absolutely no sense to me

You ask how she is 10k years world? It’s clear that she belongs to the outworld, and her age is a product of some superhuman power, like subzero’s ice.

Why was she at Shang Tsung’s island? Why did he adopt her? ... valid questions that the movie doesn’t answer or even attempt to.

It’s one issue with this movie. There are just too many characters and not enough time for them to flesh out everyone in 90 minutes. They needed to increase the run time and cut some people off (e.g. - Goro). Then, they could flesh out the backstory of people like Katana.

When this movie came out the characters were hardly fleshed out at all. It was based on the original 10 characters so characters like Reptile and Kitana were kinda like wtf characters for some people.

There is huge backstory which is explored in the games and comic books but to answer some questions.

Kitana is from a realm called Edenia where you retain your youth for long periods of time. The 10k years might be exaggerated but they aren't average humans. She represents outworld as an assassin and works under Shang Tsung.

It goes on and on from there, if this was to become a series any hope of that was squandered with the sequel.

You're right though. They definitely could've cut some things. Sonya, Liu and Johnny are enough to focus on.

Yea and Reptitle was totally insignificant and Katana’s love story wasnt really part of the game.

To say it was based on the 10 first one doesnt mesh well since it has characters from the other gamesand even Shao Khan makes an appearance.

I dont think the big amount of characters was the issue but rather the poor storyline. Limited budget. Bad sequences. It was done more of a cash grab than a love of the game.
