Why was Chan fighting Shang Tsung at the beginning of the film?

The tournament hadn't even started and he was not involved. Discuss.

Thanks for your explanations. The 3rd one seems reasonable. It did seem like one approached the other to fight. Besides as for choice number 2 if Chan fought Shang Tsung and lost in a previous Mortal Kombat Shang Tsung would've killed him then. Ya, it certainly seems like one approached the other. I think Shang Tsung was probably too cocky to take Chan serious enough to approach him first. Pretty nasty fight scene, the way Shang Tsung crushes Chan's spine. (ick) Then how he snarls, "Your brother's soul is mine! you..will be next!" Then his face morphs into a corpse face as Liu Kang wakes up. Guy was a creepy bastard. The actor did an excellent job.

I figured Shang Tsung attacked Chan as a way to provoke Liu Kang into joining the tournament. Why he would want people that could defeat him in the tournament is a question that I have no answer to.

In one of the early versions of the script, Liu's grandfather mentioned that Chan was tricked by a visitor. The stranger befriended Chan, and Chan thought they could train together for the tournament. Chan was too deceived and when the time came, Shang was too much for him.

My guess is they were hinting that Shang took on a different form to earn Chan's trust. Doesn't specifically say how the fight (that we saw) started, but it gives your mind a few seeds on how it might have gotten to it.
