Terrible!

I am usually a sucker for the "Englishwoman in Italy" genre, but I
found the performances by Redgrave, Fox and Thurman totally buffoonish
and embarrassing. The attempt at comedy was like watching a bad high
school play. Yes, I could spend a month or two at that resort, as long
as I didn't run into those three characters.

Personally I really have to agree with you. I think, though, it is not the actors, but the director. I don't know about Fox, but Redgrave and Thurman are great actresses. But when directing is bad, even good actor can turn one embarrassing spoiled egg.

Totally agree. I couldn't watch to the end of the film.

The acting was so stilted and hammy, it was embarrassing to watch.

I expected them all to burst out laughing at any moment and say "suckers!"

I watched this movie with my Mom, sister and brother-in-law one fridgid weekend in Fergus Falls, MN. They had no cable so there weren't a ton of options on TV. The only thing that made it enjoyable was that my bro-in-law & I sat and did Mystery Science Theater commentary the whole time. Otherwise I'd sooner have taken a 5 mile walk in -20 degree weather.

Simply awful. The three main charactors all acted like a bunch of giggling kids. Vanessa Redgrave was embarrassing-- flitting around like a teenager, laughing at nothing. Baaaad Movie !!

I rather enjoyed this and watched it several times on Netflix. Not terrible, once you understand the tone and pace.

my god its full of stars

Well, finally--tho' damning with faint praise is hardly worth an accolade. I'd say the people on this thread are too green to appreciate this film. The remark by the one youngster who finds Redgrave's character embarrassing for engaging in a flirtation, simply because she is past a certain age...priceless. Seriously, some folks should simply be banned from watching films they can't possibly understand. Sheesh....

They filled in the blanks with pablum....

I haven't seen the movie, but only watching Lake's Como scenery is enjoyable by it's own! Anyway, I'm telling that my husband did like that film very much! The reason? He has been there - Como, (years ago), also found dialogs clever enough! Not leaving apart Uma Thurman who was very beautiful!☺
