What was the point of...

... the love triangle? Or is it a love square? Anyway, after she tells that boy that she can't be with him out of respect for her friend, he dissapears from the story. The friend keeps appearing but to do nothing more than to talk to her about HER issues. Seriously, how did he feel when she went to the rooftop with the other boy?

Ties with the theme of disjointed love: the grandfather clock's Prince & Princess, Shiro's WWII love, Shizuku's fantasy story plot, The Baron and Baroness dolls, Shizuku and Seiji union, separation, then ultimate reunion. Could be wrong, but that's what I picked up from the story.
