i have fallen in love with shizuku...

Yeah. I know this sounds funny, but every time i watch Whisper of the Heart, I fall in love with her. Kudos to Ghibli for being this amazing.

When I was younger and first watched it, I couldn't help but wish that I could meet a girl that was as interesting, sincere, and likable as Shizuku.

Now that I'm a bit older (20), that endearment has gradually morphed into this strange feeling of hoping that I can one day raise my future kids to be like her and Seiji.

It's an odd feeling.

reply

It is amazing I feel the same way.

And don't you know it, I wathched this for the first time today with my 8 year old daughter, who is a complete and utter bookworm, with that same quality of wit that Shizuku has, and while my daughter kept telling me how much she thought she was like Shizuku, my heart was breaking as I daydreamed about her growing up to be like her. What a fantastic character, so beautifully drawn (metaphorically and literally). She's has instantly become one of my top inspirational female lead characters, I love her to bits.

reply

Haha, now that you mention it, remember what makes Shizuku Shizuku is that she has very "unAsian" parents, who not only listen to and respect their daughter's intelligence, but even support her when she make decision based on her will. And also trusting her ability to do that-- note how they didn't ask her too many questions ("What kind of story are you writing? How long is it going to be? Who will proofread it for you? Will it be good enough to be sold on eBay?" etc.) but just let her do it. And she did. And she learned a lot through the process.

You think you can be a dad (you are a guy right?) like that? It takes guts to let go!

reply

You never know what kind of dad you can be until you are one, I guess.

I just hope when the time comes, I can follow through =)

reply

Actually they never even knew what she was doing, she didn't want to tell them, but they still let her do it, because they knew it was so important to her, no matter what it was. Supportive parents at it's best!

reply

I love it when her dad walks in as she is sleeping in all her clothes and says, 'my little warrior', even though he never sees much of her he knows she is battling in everyway and struggling to know what to do, it's like at that moment she has a turning point and he just knows without her needing to explain.

reply

Wow can't believe you just said that - this is exactly what I thought to myself after watching it again... I'm 21 and i saw it for the second time last week and nearing the end I thought to myself I would one day hope to raise a kid as driven and interesting as Shizuku :)))

reply

Guess I'm weird too because I've never gotten over her.

I don't know if I'd call it funny,
but if you people are High Schoolers or
older I'd call it sick. She's a Junior High
schooler... probably no more than 13.
Falling for a cartoon character is one thing, but
fantasizing about an under-age girl (real or imaginary)
is just plain wrong...

calm the hell down, ghost hat. you're missing what these people are saying.

I know how you feel. Actually the whole story reminds me of my first love, it really amazed me when I first watched this movie, the parallels in my own life. Though my own story didn't have the happy ending that I imagined Shizuku and Seiji having.

reply

What I like about this film is its deceptive simplicity and its realistic portrayal of adolescent life. Shizuku is probably the epitome of what many of us were/are like at that stage in our lives - to me, Seiji represents the person we all aspire to be in terms of goals/ambitions. Despite it being a Japanese production, this film has a very European feel to it if you ask me.

reply

Me too. There are lot of pretty Ghibli characters, but she has one of the best personalities too.
