This film is so misunderstood it's a sin.
So many people watch this and just label it as a dumb high school romance drama for preteen girls but there's sooooooo much more to it than that. Don't you love how nobody who just likes to see high octane explosions can ever understand the concept of a theme. There are so many universal themes in this, such as not knowing what you want to do with your life, being seperated from people you care about, wanting to take charge of your own life, being hard on yourself, it goes on and on. It's amazing that an animated film can be a real-life drama with little fantasy such as this one yet be so good. Characters are so fleshed out and real it's almost like they were copied gene-by-gene from real people. And Ghibli's attention to detail is so insane that whether you're looking inside a house, at the city of Tokyo or just a street it's so detailed that it feels like they're not even drawings, and even like you're actually there. And to top it all off, this movie has a warmth to it that I have never seen Pixar come anywhere close to, and I love Pixar. Who agrees that this film is misunderstood to the point of a crime?
