Watching with my students...

I was (and I guess I still am) a huge Power Rangers fan, and I don't hate the movie... but a few things have dawned on me after about twenty years of not having seen it.

1) Rocky is a moron.
2) Kimberly is way too damsel-in-distress in this movie to be the Pink Ranger.
3) How was Dulcea dressed the way she was for a PG-rated kids' movie? I almost saw vag.

Also, how did they ever tie this in to the TV show, since some of the characters (the pig villain) weren't in the show, and the command center was a completely different set?

reply

This movie was an all American remake. The TV series is originally Japanese just with American footage pasted on top.

If you look closely Rita Repulsa was a different actress and not dubbed and the pig guy was there most likely because of licensing/permission issues.

The red black and yellow power rangers aren't the original power rangers

And the only reason why Kimberly was the damsel in distress was because she is pretty and that's Hollywood for you.

I really disliked that Kimberly was a bit too damsel in distress after having been a great fighter in most of the episodes.

LOL about Rocky, don't remember too much of him and don't know why Dulcea had that skimpy outfit but I bet almost all kids completely ignored/didn't even notice it (and are then shocked on rewatching the movie years later).

i noticed dulcea's outfit. i definitely noticed. so did my friends

1) Yeah. I guess Rocky is supposed to be the well-intentioned overly-aggressive dumb jock type. It doesn't help that the actor really isn't that great.
2) It's sort of just for one scene where the Tengu warriors carry her off. She mostly holds her own, even if she does remark on things being "gross" or other Valley girl stereotypes (it was the 90's after all)
3) Well, it's a Bikini and not presented in a sexual way, so I guess they could get away with that.

The pig villain was used as a way to save budget and just have two characters on the show rolled into one. And yes, the Command Center, the Rangers' outfits, Alpha, Lord Zed and Rita, and pretty much everything else got a boost in budget money.

Dulcea dressed the way she dressed was one of the highlights of my childhood as far as movies go.
im really happy they did that. i had a major crush on her. shes the only reason i ever watch this again

1) Rocky's OK to me, but he was better as Zeo Ranger III, Blue, a lot of fans say.

2) I haven't seen this movie in a while, but the only times I saw where she met that was during the fights with the Tengu and when Ivan Ooze got her Zord in that electromagnetic deadlock, but she was able to break free with help from Aisha.

3) I'm not sure honestly...

I've heard this is non-canon to the TV show and it's in a separate universe.
