What are currently your 3 personal favorite Woody Allen films and why?

What are currently your 3 (or even 4 or 5 fave picks, if 3 makes it too difficult) personal favorite Woody Allen films made and released so far and please say why (for either the writing, the acting and casting, the direction, or a combo of all of these factors) for each film named.

Purple Rose of Cairo for bringing dreams alive and showing how we can't hold em and the best acting in the Careers of Jeff Daniels and Mia Farrow
Bullets over Broadway for showing the stories behind the story and the usual Cusack Performance and Palminteri shing above it.
Mighty Aphrodite for confronting us with our perception of Woody Allen and a good Performance by F.Murray Abraham.

1. Annie Hall
2. Hannah and Her Sisters
3. Manhattan
4. Purple Rose of Cairo
5. Radio Days
6. Bullets over Broadway

In no particular order (I've seen about 2/3 of his films):

Best 5 (probably incomplete though, I haven't seen some of his good films in a while, such as Manhattan and Husbands and Wives):

Deconstructing Harry
Annie Hall
Everything You Always Wanted to Know about Sex but Were Afraid to Ask
Take the Money and Run
Match Point (this isn't really a Woody Allen film, but what the heck)

His worst films IMO (again, probably incomplete):

Interiors
Bullets Over Broadway
Sweet and Lowdown

How was Match Point not an Allen film?

reply

I meant not a typical Allen film.

I'm no Woody expert. I've seen many of his films once or twice. All I can say for sure is that Hannah and Her Sisters is not only my favorite of his films, but one of my favorite films I've ever seen (and by far one of the most underrated movies in the last 20 years). The story is fun, the script and dialogue is brilliant, every role is perfectly cast, it succesfully takes on several large issues without being cluttered, it's one of his best directed film, all of the music selections are superb and it's - in my opinion - one of his funniest films (I didn't even smile during Love and Death). Right up there with The Godfather, Citizen Kane and Casablanca, it's one of the only movies I can think of off the top of my head that I'd deem perfect.

I agree that Hannah and Her Sisters is a wonderfully rich and rewarding movie. If you haven't seen it, make plans to do so.
If I were limited to only three, I'd add Annie Hall and The Purple Rose of Cairo. But there is an interesting concept in nearly every one of his films.

*Scoop-Sexy Scarlett Johanssen
*Melinda and Melinda-Sexy Radha Mitchell....{although, I don't really like the ending}
*Purple Rose of Cairo-Hilarious and wacky...

However, I still have yet to see some other Allen films, so that list may change...

1) Annie Hall
2) Crimes and Misdemeanors
3) Mighty Aphrodite
4) Bullets Over Broadway
5) Love and Death

Honorable mention: the last 30 seconds of Manhattan Murder Mystery: exactly the way I'll always remember them- an absolutely perfect, shamelessly fan-pleasing ending to one of the greatest pairings in movie history.

1. Alice - I love the premise, who wouldn't?
2. Midsummer Night's Sex Comedy - I laughed my ass off the first time I saw this, and fell in love with the whimsical treatment of Shakespeare
3. Hannah and Her Sisters - Sad and sweet and a wonderful story

1) "Another Woman": A heart-wrenching performance by Gena Rowlands in a film that touches me deeply.
2) "Crimes and Misdemeanors": Martin Landau excels in a provocative morality tale with a superb ensemble cast.
3) "Match Point": Tremendously suspenseful, and a lot of fun.

Honorable mention: "Husbands and Wives," "Annie Hall," "Interiors" and almost all of Woody's other films except for a few misfires like "Anything Else" and "Celebrity."

reply

Wow, no one mentioned "Radio Days", definitely one of my favorites.

reply

I love "Radio Days," but Woody has so many excellent films that there's a lot of competition for the top. I think I'd put "Radio Days" at No. 6 or 7, but I love all his films, and of course it's a matter of opinion.
