Some jokes in the movie I didn't get

1 - Lenny mentioned DiMaggio's record. Anybody?
2 - "He looks like Broderick Crawford". Who's that? Is it important?
3 - "Your paranoia is rivaled in history only by Joseph Stalin". I know Stalin had a mental illness at the last years preceding his death. My question is, was that mental illness paranoia? Was it severe?
4 - Lenny said he worked out not religiously, I know it must be a dumb question since English is my third language. But I really don't get, does it have to do with religion? It can't be, since Linda pointed out religion and it was intended to be a joke. So what does it mean "working out religiously" ?
5 - Linda answering the phone: "Hello? Busy. Some of them are called John, alright?" What has the name John to do with anything? Was that joke?
6 - The Greek Choir was discussing Lenny's case, and then Cassandra predicted what was going to happen, "I see (...) WORSE, I SEE LAWYERS!!" There were no lawyers, were there?

reply

Wow, you're dumb.

reply

I know, I'm sorry. But what's important is to try to understand things, than being ignorant.
But since you're NOT dumb, try and educate me please.

reply

You really took the high road there. Kudos.

reply

I didn't get these pretentious jokes either. You are NOT alone.

reply

The only thing I can answer is 4. If you do something religiously it means you do it constantly and in a routine, very dedicated. It seems Lenny was the opposite of it if he didn't work out religiously.

1 Di Maggio made his record back in the fourties.. it has become legend... When their friend is sayin he is paying the bill.. Woody is teasing him, because the friend apparently NEVER picks up the check.. so if he pays this AND the next.. Woody thinks it's in the same league as beating De Maggios record

2 Don't know.. looked him up. Crawford was an actor and was sort of butch looking and often played tough guys.. so saying a baby looks like this tough actor would probably get some laughs from peolpe who knew who Crawford actually was

3. I think stalin was famous for trusting nobody... he probably had a lot of people executed just because of this paranoia

4. Has been answered

5. John is slang/code name for the prostitutes costumers

6. She says "I see disaster, i see catastrophe.. worse I see Lawyers"... It's a joke! Surprise.... meaing Lawyers are worse than disaster and catastrophe..

It's also worth noting that Joe DiMaggio's record for most consecutive Major League games with a base hit (56) has long been considered to be among the most "unbreakable" records in sports history (or, at least, American pro sports). That's why he picked that particular record for comparison in the joke.

At the risk of being fooled by bradleybaldwinbradley-ba, and English is really your third language I'd like to offer a few responses from some of the respondents to your questions. First, if English is your third language, kudos to you for writing so well, especially spelling correctly words that often trip up our "stellar" U.S. public educated products, e.g., severe; paranoia; religiously; preceding and choir.

My sister-in-law is a native of Nicaragua, residing in the U.S. for 25 years, and wonders what her husband means when he says, "I'm just here working away." She asks me, how can he be working away if he is here. These are simply idiomatic expressions all languages employ, if you're familiar enough with them. By the way, you're not dumb for not knowing these expressions or characters, especially if you're a non-native with less than, say, 20 years residence. You may be ignorant, meaning lacking specific knowledge, but dumb means you can't speak, but many use it to mean ignorant.

What is troubling is how filipelli responded to you by saying 'Wow, you're dumb...then fails to answer your question, giving the clear impression that he/she is really the ignorant one, not to mention uncharitable. I'd be interested to know how many languages in which filipelli is fluent, including writing. Probably none. For KyleCheeks, I wouldn't characterize these lines in the film as pretentious, they're merely expressions regarding historical characters and events. For Pusterummet, I would enhance your answer by saying Joseph Stalin was the Hitler of Russia from 1924 to his death in 1953 and was certainly paranoid, but also merciless and ruthless, causing more deaths during his communist dictatorship than Hitler. Lastly, you're correct about Joe Dimaggio in part, but to what record were they referring, years played as a Yankee, number of strike outs in a season? It was for the number of consecutive games in which 'joltin Joe'got a hit and it was followed faithfully by all New Yorkers at the time...I think the final number exceeded 50 games and the record stood for decades.

Anyway, for bradley...keep up your learning and writing, you are ahead of 99% of all Americans in that you know more than two languages. Scientia est Potentia (Knowledge is Power) Lepanto

I'm French and I just finished watching this movie. There's a joke I didn't understand :

"I'd hate to tell you what they call my son in Harlem "

What does it mean?

reply

The implication is that in Harlem a guy who has had sex with his mother would be called a motherf ucker.

reply

I think you have some of these answered already, but I might as well tell you just in case.
1. Dimaggio was a famous sports figure and Allen's character is a sports writer, plus Lenny is an athlete.
2. Broderick Crawford was a famous actor who appeared on the TV series Highway Patrol and other works. Check his listing on here.
3. No idea and don't care.
4. When you work out religiously, it means you are working out on a constant basis.
5. A "John" in her sort of work, is a client that wants to have sex with her. I have no idea why they use that name. Maybe because it is a popular name. Same thing with when I was in school and they used that name a lot in sentences when we were learning to read.
6. That is a joke on how crappy lawyers can be.

reply

Guess you didn't get too many of these answered, after reading all the comments.
