It All Makes Sense Now!
So Heinz's daughter Emily DID really die ... that explains why, when the crew ask if she's about 10 now, Heinz doesn't answer, but just says they ought to be going. Now that I think about it, that explains the line, "Memories aren't an escape!" as well.
What I find so strange and wonderful about this story is the fact that Eva is actually dead -- and the computer acts as her ghost, immortalizing her love of Carlo and her host of memories for all eternity.
