Magnetic Rose and the anime PlanetES

Did anyone else note the fact that the whole premise to "Magnetic Rose" is very similar to the animeseries PlanetES (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0816398/). Even the characters are somewhat similar (specially Miguel and Heinz who are very similar to "Hachimaki" and Yuri).

Im guessing the writer was a fan of this segment and continued using the same setup.

Yes! I described it as Planetes meets Ghost Ship, with maybe a sprinkle of Firefly and The Matrix.

but PlanetES is fairly new. Magnetic Rose is from 1995, based on an 80's Otomo short-story.
