Missing fingers???

Watched this movie and I need some help. I don't understand the whole missing fingers thing. I remember the guy reading a letter and it mentions about people with missing fingers. Then the guys goes to visit the lady at the laundry place after she left the hospital (that had the doctor who was missing a finger). And now she's missing her finger.

Maybe I do get it and just don't like it. It doesn't feel like it was tied up very well or at least come out with a sequel that continues on with the story.

Ps- Thanks for your responses! Much appreciated!

Missing fingers, maybe show you're devoted to the demon or something? Ending kind of ticked me off too. But if you count part 3, then the next generation failed? Haven't seen 3 yet, but I think the machine was destroyed in the beginning.

Remember how they said several times "There is a piece of me in it, and a piece of its in me"? Basically they said the rich old timers of that community made a contract or something with a machine god/demon in the machine, and they offer a human sacrifice to the machine periodically. From what I gather, it has to be a "Piece of me" which is offered, so sons/daughters. During the final chase sequence the Mangler took one of her fingers. Now a piece of HER is inside IT, and a piece of IT is inside HER. So shes evil now.

AzureKite has hit the nail on the head there. Very depressing ending.
