Overrated??

Well i do enjoy Kevin smith movies but I have tried several times to try to get into this movie and I just cant do it. i think out of his big five meaning Clerks, Mallrats, Dogma, Chasing Amy and Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back this is by far my least favorite and certainly the most overrated of them all in my opinion. The story is not that funny and I just feel that it is too farfetched in way to many places. Yes I know it is supposed to be a silly comedy and a good way to spend an hour and a half but I certainly can think of some much better underrated comedies that are way more fun and make me laugh. I know I am going to catch some slack for this but what do you guys think.

reply

It sucks.

reply

Even saying it sucks is over-rating it.

reply

How can Mallrats be overrated when almost every critic trashes it?

Which order did you watch them in? Because I would think that if you saw Mallrats after those other movies, it might come off as a bit of a let-down. While on the other hand if you saw Mallrats first, when it originally came out, like I did, you might be more endeared to it.

Maybe it's because I live in NJ and used to go practically every weekend to the Rt. 1 Flea Market (which is now, unfortunately, a Sony Multi-plex theater) and I felt some kind of affinity to the references in the movie. BTW, the outside shot of the Rt.1 Flea is real, while the inside looked NOTHING like that, and there was NEVER a gypsy fortune teller booth/tent there, ever. LOL. Plus in 1995, everyone still didn't exactly have a PC, and a lot of people did hang out at malls just to socialize and kill time. I remember those stupid optical 3-D eyeball art pictures where everywhere, literally everywhere! Nowadays people probably don't even really remember them that much. Some people saw the 3-D picture right away, while others just never got it.

Or maybe you have to have a comic book "fanboy" mentality to begin with...I really related to the character and found it hilarious that he couldn't stop playing hockey on his Sega Genesis long enough to enjoy sex. If you're not kinda "nerdy" like that, then I can see how it'd be hard to relate.

At any rate, what's sad is that I used to like Jason Lee, and actually watched My Name is Earl a little, but once I heard he was a Scientologist, I almost cannot stand looking at his face any longer.

I tried as well to watch it more than once, but just can't....the simple reason is....it sucks, and yes it's overrated given the IMDB rating of 7.1, maybe they got those numbers switched around? 1.7 is a more accurate rating. A movie that only appeals to a small group of nerdy virgins who relate to such unlikable characters, there is nothing funny about this movie.

reply

haha, very good reason u give there, shows alot of hard thinking you have put into that. This will come as a huge shock for you, so embrace yourself: 1) this very small group of nerdy virgins might be enormous, but hey if you think in stereoptypes, you are certainly not one of them, nerds use their brain better 2) not only nerdy virgins like it, I knew lots of regular nerds who loved it too.

cheers

it cant be overrated! it lost money! it got bad reviews! it can only be underrated! which i wont say it is, but i liked it a lot

"There's nothing funny about this film?" - You must be kidding yourselves!!!
If Silent Bob dressing up as Batman or the Easter Bunny getting beaten up or a fat guy getting the sh*ts because he can't see a sailboat in a picture isn't funny, then it's a wonder why you people even bother watching ANY of Kevin Smith's movies!!!

If it's any of the five movies that were aforementioned by the OP, that is overrated, it has to be DOGMA. Originally I liked it but after watching it again recently, the reality is Salma Hayek can't act for sh*t, Chris Rock has no funny lines in it (and he's the comedian out of all of them) and Jason Mewes incessant & needless use of the F-Word summed up how bad this movie was.

Both Mallrats & Dogma had big name casts, but the difference is, Dogma's cast was more established any Hollywood whereas a majority of the cast of Mallrats were just starting out. No wonder box office figures favored Dogma more..

Anyone, this is just the way I see it personally.

I h8 ppl who claim a film to be "the worst movie ever", when they've never seen "Going Overboard"

reply

There were some funny parts, but the movie is ruined by one of the stupidest ending I've been witness of.

"I don't wanna be the first nigg** to die from a crossbow!!"

reply

How is that ending stupid, it was genius, the entire dating game scene was so well done, While its not Smiths best its still good, its the "godfather 3" of Kevin Smith movies, its not his best but its not bad imo by any stretch

reply

I mean come on... both guys miraculously manage to reconquer their loved ones, the hero becomes host of his own show and marries the girl... if you think this is genius, well...

"I don't wanna be the first nigg** to die from a crossbow!!"

reply

originality and creativity are two different things, of course the ending was cliche but that is the case for most movies.

So i stand by my statement of it being a "genius" ending.

reply

i found some funny things in this movie, but none of them were the things you mentioned...anyway this movie was nowhere as good or funny as Chasing Amy, this movie was like a trial run toward that

reply

Well I love it and a lot of people do
It's actually my 3rd favorite comedy, the other two being Airplane! and J&SBSB

Love this movie and every other movie of his. =D

Yeah, it's terrible. I recently got into the Kevin Smith's SModcast, and am going back to rewatch his old films. I remember some of them being bad, and my opinion hasn't changed the second time around. While Clerks had some poor acting, the script was good and the low budget grainy B&W helped give it the feel of a gritty indie flick. With Mallrats Smith was just trying to be John Hughes, while missing all of the elements of what made Hughes movies good. Thumbs down.

reply

It aint overrated just because you don't like it. and that goes for all the rest of you people. Learn the true meaning of the word "Overrated" before using it. Goodbye

reply

Like someone else said, it cannot be overrated! It did poorly and got bad reviews!

Look at that turtle go bro!

reply

I don't think this movie is overrated at all it is probably my favourite out of the Kevin Smith movies, I think it has the most rewatch-ability. And as for it being far fetched, Silent Bob pulls a blow up sex doll out of his pocket then a Batman gun which propels them in the air, don't you think far fetched is what they were going for?

reply

^^ Haha exactly.

reply

I think the people posting here who don't like this movie have seen other Kevin Smith movies, and then gone back and watched Mallrats. It will never have the same effect as if you watched it back in the 90s when it came out. This was the first real look at Jay and Silent Bob and they were hillarious!

It's like watching Beveryly Hills Cop today... it's nowhere near as funny as it was when it came out, but if you can put your mindset back to what life was like in the 80s, it's still awesome!
