Would you rather know or not know when you're gonna die??

... I'd rather know; at least then I'm aware of how much time there is left for my dreams to come true...

You're 23 and you spend your days in bed with a girl.. you waste your life!

not know.

know

reply

I'd rather know. What? You guys like to be suprised(or shocked?) by death? But still it's near impossible to ever know...so the question itself is a no brainer.

reply

I'd want to know. Like in Big Fish "On one hand, if death was all you thought about, it could screw you up. But it could help too, because everything else you know you could survive."
I like that, you could take more risks if you knew it wouldnt kill you. Right?

I know, doesnt it!
You should go see Big Fish ASAP. IMO, its Tim Burtons best movie. He didnt write it, but he directed it. Its an incredible story and beautifully filmed.
Deffinently on my top 10 list.

Ps. Love your tag. Its the only Beck song I really like. It is Beck, isnt?

reply

Yeah, lots of people I trust about these things have recommended it to me! It's sitting on my shelf, but I haven't got around to popping it in and giving it a go, yet.

Yep, it's Beck. I like Devil's Haircut too, but I haven't gotten any of his albums, yet... I just think that lyric is really clever, though. One of those weird things - music was playing, I was bored with my old sig... There you go!

This is JaneDoe333, thats my work account.
I just looked at your profile, based on the movies you listed I think you'll like it. By the way, good list. Im going to add a few to mine that I forgot about.

Listening to Beck now:
"Get crazy with the cheese wiz!"
My fav is "Fallin' a termite whos choking on the splinters"

So tell me, what TV do you watch? PLease tell me you watch LOST. Im dieing to talk to someone about it. I work at a video store and couldnt find anyone that watches it. But I live in a small town with a lot of granola eating-no tv watching-too much money for their own good-snooty people.
The only English show Ive seen is "Keeping Up Appearances", but not by choice.
Good to meet ya,
Amy

Hi!

I just looked at your list too... Pumpkin intrigues me. What's your take on it? (I know I could just look it up on here, but I like hearing individual viewpoints... ) All I know about it is that Christina Ricci is in it...

"Get crazy with the cheese-whiz!" There's another good lyric from the same song!

Sorry, can't help ya - don't watch Lost... I tuned into the first episode or so but when the curveballs came about strange noises, etc, I wasn't too interested... My friends all say I quit way too early, so maybe in the future I'll borrow their boxsets and have another go!

I mostly watch English comedy stuff, but the one American drama I'm a big fan of is Rescue Me. I know "Keeping Up Appearances" but I'm not keen on it, I prefer more sarcastic stuff like Blackadder, I'm Alan Partridge, Red Dwarf, etc...

Nice to meet you, as well... !

reply

Ok the thing about Pumpkin, its not your average comedy. My friend and I have inside jokes about because we're the only ones who've seen it. Whats unique about it is that no one is really chasing jokes, the humor is there, almost with intention. The review I just read on it by cornorshop20 was very good. Its a pretty trippy movie, worth giving it a shot.

OH! The only way to watch LOST is on DVD, no commercials or cliff hangers. Im a total junkie for it, I wish I could wait for the third season to come to DVD, but I cant! And theres only 2 episodes left, its killing me. But they just signed on for 3 more seasons, hopefully it will stay as good as it is now. And not fade out like some shows, trying to hard to hold on to it. Like The X Files..
BUT! Some people are really put off by all the mysteries, dont have the patience for it. Im the opposite, I love the roller coaster ride that is LOST.

I saw the first season of Rescue Me and loved it, Id like to find the second season. I havent seen it anywhere so far. Is it true it got more crude in the 2nd? More sex and drugs and less story? Ill watch it either way. My family is a huge fan of Denis Leary, especially his stand up. If you dont know it already, find "No Cure For Cancer" its his best.
Ive heard of Blackadder and Red Dwarf, but never seen them. Ill look them up.

Toodles!

reply

Yeah, it isn't that I didn't like LOST, but I mostly hate having to watch TV shows in real time and waiting for the story developments, etc. If I had the DVD's I'd probably enjoy watching it a lot more and stay with it, but if it's a complicated programme then I need to be able to watch as much of it in one sitting as possible. Otherwise, by the time it returns I don't have any more interest in the mystery and find it difficult to get enthusiastic again... I have a pretty short attention-span, I guess!

To be honest I can't remember the second season of Rescue Me because the third season just finished over here this past Sunday, so that's more fresh in my mind! It's the characters that keep me watching though, so if you liked the first run then you should be OK with the rest of it. I've never seen No Cure for Cancer but I've heard of it. Before doing Rescue Me Denis Leary was more known in Britain for being the face of beer ads on our TV, rather than anything comedic.

Take care!

Sorry it took so longto get back, been very busy.
You'll like seeing LOST on DVD, its the only way to go. If you space it out right, you'll finish the second season just in time for the third to come out. Probably this fall sometime, Im not sure.

Thats intersting about Denis leary. I dont know what he conciders himself, but around here, hes a comedian before an actor. And if you dont mind crude humor, you should track down the DVD or CD of "No Cure..."
And my personal favorite of his movies is The Ref, he's great in it. The whole cast is. Its one of the those movies thats in the $5 bin at Walmart. It was misreppresented, he even said it wasnt advertised right. Very funny movie.
He was also known for his apperences on MTV in the 90s. He would about 30 seconds to rant about something. Id love to find a DVD of all of them put together. MTV needs to release it, it would sell.

So what else do you watch as far as TV goes?
Ta Ta!

reply

No problem; nice to hear from you again!

Nope, I'm fine with crude humour. So many people seem to love The Ref on here, so I gotta seek it out. I would never have heard of it if it weren't for this place, but I guess that's down to poor marketing, as you mentioned.

There aren't many current series I watch right now. Aside from comedy and Rescue Me, it's probably mainly sport, but then all kinds of movies. I try and watch at least one new one a day, but depending on how busy I am it doesn't always work out like that. Last one I saw was The Ringer with Johnny Knoxville - OK, I guess, but not great. So how about you, anyway? What TV/movies/music/books have you come across lately, when you haven't been rushed off your feet?

In the time of chimpanzees, I was a monkey...

reply

I thought The Ringer was pretty funny, like you said not great but good. It was tastefully done.
Ok, here we go..
TV:
LOST, Heroes, House, Carnivale, Family Guy, Showbiz Show with David Spade, Daily Show with Jon Stewart, Survivor, Late Night with Conan O'Brien (hands down my favorite host), ocasionally Ill watch American Idol, but Im not crazy about it. I like to watch the auditions for these kind of reality shows, just to watch people make FOOLS of themselves!
Movies, well you've seen my list, I recently added to it too. Look up the 1990 Trust, about the pregnant teenager. Its good, a strange comedy. Its been on IFC latley.
Books:
I love Stephen King, most recently CELL. I love post-apocalyptic settings, which is what CELL is set in...sort of. Its a new take on the zombie genre, very good. I really miss the characters. Soon to be a movie, I think it will film well. Ive also read by King: Tommyknockers, Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon, part of Pet Sematary (too scary, even for me. The movie traumatized me when I was little), a few short stories, and Ive started just about all of them. Im not good with keeping up with a book.
Other than King, Im working on Lucifers Hammer (1977 novel about a comet hitting the Earth). OOh, and The Tao Of Pooh, absolutley wonderful book!! It teaches Taoism through the characters in Winnie the Pooh. Mind blowing, really!
And finally Music:
Nirvana, The Offspring, Bush, Marilyn Manson, some Korn, Garbage, Sarah McLachlan, 70's Soul, Bill Withers, Green Day (old stuff, not new), Cake, Kid Rock, Dixie Chicks, Dusty Springfield, Fiona Apple, Hole (dont judge me! Live Through This is a good album, even if she is a mudering coke whore), Janis Joplin, Johnny Cash, Natalie Merchant, No Doubt (Tragic Kingdom), some NIN, Stone Temple Pilots, Tom Waits, Sublime..oh geez I'll stop now. Quite a party mix, I know. It was the way I was raised, my parents are total opposites, especially in music.

You gotta be careful with asking me these kind of questions! I answer in deatil.
Your turn!

"Champagne for my real friends, real pain for my sham friends." -Tom Waits

reply

Here goes with me... (Some will be cribbed from yours, especially with TV, since as I said I'm not watching a lot of new stuff... )

TV

Family Guy (I only recently got into this because it's shown at weirdly late times over here; I'm really fond of The Simpsons, but this seems to get away with more stuff because it's so daring) I gotta hold my hands up and admit that I watch American Idol regularly too, as well as our current variant, The X Factor... I know it's contrived, but you usually get some talented people on there - who then get voted off before their time...

Books

I'm a Stephen King fan, too. My favourite from him is The Stand, so it sounds like I'm going to like Cell too, purely because of the similar setting... (Funnily enough, it's going to be directed by Eli Roth and I just watched and enjoyed Hostel today... ) My best friend doesn't read much, but he rates Pet Sematary as one of the scariest books he's ever picked up...

I've heard of The Tao of Pooh - Sounds interesting... !

Two British authors you might need to look up if you're interested: Iain Banks (he writes sci-fi using the name 'Iain M. Banks', but I prefer his general stuff... ) and Christopher Brookmyre. Banks does a bit of everything, but two of my favourite books from him are Whit, a story about a girl from a group similar to the Amish, who's sent to find her older sister out in the real world, and also The Crow Road - a book about a guy trying to trace his long-lost Scottish ancestors... Both are funny, but they have a good mix of everything in there, because the guy knows how to tell a good tale.

Chris Brookmyre writes crime fiction, but it's not too heavy, because funny ordinary characters find themselves getting accidentally involved. Good if you like unusual plots that don't get too complicated.

... and also to read, if you like fantasy - an American guy by the name of Terry Goodkind. His series goes in sequence so it's best to start at the beginning, Wizards First Rule... I'm not normally heavily into that kind of stuff, but he makes his characters so realistic, despite them having magical powers, etc...

Music: There's none of your stuff I dislike. Some of it I'm not familiar with, though...

Nirvana, the Offspring, Alice in Chains, Pearl Jam, Garbage, Motown, 70's punk (Clash, Sex Pistols, etc... ) Bruce Springsteen, Muse, Radiohead, The Doors, Dusty Springfield, Johnny Cash, No Doubt, Madness, Stone Temple Pilots, AC/DC, Deff Leppard, Lostprophets...

The band I'm most into right now is Soundgarden, followed by Audioslave (not surprising, since they both have Chris Cornell in common!) Soundgarden are my new favourite band, but previously I have also loved The White Stripes, Jamiroquai and Stereophonics... I still do, just not quite as much.

So, I'd say that's a fairly comprehensive overview of me...

I LOVE Family Guy, I own all the seasons except the most recent. What I like most about the humor is when they lead you to the right then hit you hard from left field. Look over here, then BAM!
I stopped watching this seasons Idol when "Gina Something" got voted off, I liked her. But I was happy with the final two. I dont get why it has to be a
1-2 hour show, they could do it in 5 mins. But thats TV I guess. I just find out the results the next day, Im not sitting through all that fluff. LOL.

The Stand is a big one on my list of books to read. Im waiting until I have nothing but time. NO TV! Otherwise I wont finish it. IT, The Talisman, and Needful Things are on that same list.
I was actually disappointed when I saw Eli Roth was directing CELL. I liked Cabin Fever a lot, but hated Hostel. Sorry, I just did. I think it was one of those movies you either liked or didnt.
OOOO I cant watch Pet Sematary, theres some deep trauma in me from that one. Theres only two movies that I cant watch, that one and The Dentist.
*shudder*
The Dentist thing really gets to me, Ive gotten past going to the real dentist, though. I had braces for 5 years, so Im pretty comfortable there now. Unless Im having serious work done, then Im all about the laughing gas. LOVE THAT STUFF! Ever had it?

I will definitely look up those writers, I wish I had more time to read. I should cancel cable..

So what music were you not familiar with?
I have a Soundgarden CD, but I dont listen to it. I bought it for "Black Hole Sun" I love that song.
Im really liking Marilyn Manson right now, his cover of Sweet Dreams and Tainted Love is great. As long as youre not looking at him while he's singing. Im all for expression, I certainly went through a few phases, but hes above and beyond. I used to respect it, but now it makes me giggle when I see him. But I cant wait to see his Alice in Wonderland movie.
http://imdb.com/title/tt0758775/

In response to your other, yes Hole is good, but I dont care for Courtney Love. I want to like her, I would party with her, but...
I believe she hired someone to kill Kurt Cobain. If you want to know more about it, rent Kurt & Courtney, it explains everything.
Oh, look up Cake's album Fashion Nugget, its pretty good. They do a few covers, trippy music. My favorite is The Distance and I Will Survive.

So whats England like? I hear its a lot like it here in Washington,
weather-wise anyways.
Whats your new tag from? I cant place it..
Toodles

... Yeah, I'm kinda the same with AI. I watched the final, but TIVO'd through most of the excess filler they put in the middle of it... ! We don't call it TIVO over here, but I gather it's the same thing, just produced by a different company.

I think you'll enjoy The Stand, It & Needful Things, they're all good. Haven't read The Talisman, though, so can't comment on that.

Yeah, Roth seems to be one of those guys people have strong opinions on. I actually feel the opposite way to you; as I said, I liked Hostel but I wasn't impressed by Cabin Fever. If they wanted to put the film in safe hands I'd have picked someone like George Romero, then maybe we'd both be happy?

I've seen The Dentist too. It's one of those things that a lot of people are guarenteed to be spooked or grossed out by. My parents were advised that I was going to have to have braces when I was in my early teens, but when they took me back I was told that my teeth had straightened themselves out as I slept!! They must have been coming through crooked, but then righted themselves... Pretty unusual I believe, but my eyes never did a similar thing, so I didn't escape having to wear glasses.

The most serious work I've ever had done is four teeth out one after another, but they didn't make the laughing gas available to me! An injection in my cheek to numb the side of my mouth, and that was it... I suppose it's similar to morphine in effect, but I wouldn't know much about that, either. I should be thankful I've not had to spend much time in hospitals, I guess!

Yeah, I love to read but don't do it as much as I should anymore, with me always watching movies! I'm about a fifth of the way through reading The Da Vinci Code at the moment, and I haven't seen the movie yet. Who knows when I'll finish it, though, because I go a long time without getting the opportunity to pick it up...

The music I'm not familiar with is what I think is 'folky' stuff - stuff like Sarah McLachlan, Fiona Apple and Natalie Merchant... Not that I don't like them, just that I haven't really heard any examples of their work. "Sublime", too, don't really know them. What are they like?

I don't like him enough to buy an album, but I have a few Manson tracks on my playlist: mOBSCENE, Disposable Teens & Dried Up, Tied & Dead to the World. I've heard the covers and they are OK. Is there any more of his original material that you think I should hear, though? Yep, his Alice in Wonderland project should be interesting!

I think there's a good possibility that Cobain was murdered, but I haven't made up my mind for definite, yet... I saw Kurt & Courtney and I'm still not sure what to think. On the one hand they say the amount of heroin he had in his system, he wouldn't have been able to lift a gun, let alone shoot himself, etc... Yet I've heard and read counter-arguments to that and he had tried suicide before... I don't know, I wouldn't like to commit myself either way, but I do feel it's a shame he's gone, that's for sure.

England is a lot like anywhere else I guess - parts are good, others are not... I dislike my home-town, but the good news is that it's only 20 minutes away from the great city of Manchester, so that's not too bad. Famous primarily for its soccer teams (one of which I support - Manchester United) and the music it produced in the early 90's, it's a cool place where there's always something happening, even if some of its buildings don't look very nice! Oh, it's always raining a lot, too - but you get used to that, eventually.

My tag is from the 1979 comedy Meatballs, starring Bill Murray... I saw it recently and liked it. It isn't side-splitting, or anything, but it's got a real pleasant vibe about it. I suppose it helps that Bill Murray is probably my favourite comedic actor of all time!

So, tell me your opinion of Washington, then?!
Take care.
