David Lynch's 55 seconds...

Those who have seen Lynch's portion (on the Short Films DVD), please give me your explanation of this "bizzare epic". I haven't the slightest idea what's going on.

Haha, it's funny, i came to this forum to post solely(sp?) on the david lynch short, and this is the only topic.
I don't really think there's an explanation, that's david lynch. Have you seen Eraserhead? It's lynch's first full length film, and it's somewhat similar to the living room scene in the Cinematographe short.
Anyway, i loved Lynch's short because it stood out so much from the rest.

That little punk drove a golf cart through my bar mitzvah, that & he was dressed up like a beaver!

Well, to me it's one of Lynch's associative yet highly evocative pieces, and what I see happening is the following: policemen find the body of a young man; the cut to a home in middle class small town America with a typical wife/mother situates him as a member of 'normal' society; his death has to do with an obscure, criminal, and eery operation that involves cruel scientific experiments on a young naked woman; given Lynch's other works, especially _Blue Velvet_, I would guess that the 'protagonist,' i.e. now dead body, was himself connected as a guilty party in that operation; the policemen ring the doorbell at his small town home; his wife/mother learns about his death, and possibly about his dark side, too; innocence is lost, David Lynch's dark and distorted fantasies have entered the protected and naive normalcy of a family home.

how profound.

reply

indeed.

isn't it a dead girl ? (the body in the opening)
and there seems to be a strange flashback in the film. we have a man and a woman in a house, the woman wears stonewashed blue jeans. and in another shot there are two women on a bed, one of them getting out of the bed. they are dressed in old fashioned gowns. also they are in a garden! there's even a small deer in the right corner of the picture!!
i loved that short...:)

there's some weird ed wood sci-fi element to this as well... there are those aliens in cheap rubber masks doing experiments...

reply

And to think this was done as one, continuous shot.

There were a few seconds there, that seemed like a Hellish Bosch painting come to life.

reply

woman is abducted by aliens, murdered.

reply

well THAT´s what gets me.

It seems to me that the police find the body, then a cut to a woman (the dead girls mother perhaps?) who seems to sense that something is amiss. Then a view of what seems to me to be hell, where the girl is now(she is in the big acrylic tube)while the other damned souls meander about,or perhaps they are aliens conducting some kind of experiaments in a flashback before her death, then back to the policeman telling the parents of their loss.
By the way , isn't the mothers shadow a bit creepy in that last shot, like someone looking in at the window?

reply

hah i noticed the eerie shadow too.
I agree with almost everything on the interpretations given here so far but no one has really answered what the woman in the old fashined white dress getting up from the bed has to do with it...actually it's two women in the bed and one of them gets up running. I haven't been able to link that to anything else.

reply

yeah thread's three years old, but i just wanted to say that i had pretty much the same interpretation as judith, except i was thinking that it was a woman's body that was found as well, and that the woman in the tube was that woman in her mother's "thoughtfantastynightmare" thing

i just noticed the shadow at the end too

also the music in this is gggreat

reply

what does one call a light shadow? a reflective shadow? the image on the window is actually caused by the light behind and in front of the woman, so she appears as a reflection and a shadow at the same time. weird. wouldn't work on anything but glass, right?

Basically a fail I think. He tried to get so complicated that nobody can really figure out what it's about.

The next film in the movie is also a fail, but for the opposite reason: instead of attempting too much it attempts too little.
