Greatest love story ever?

To me, it is. I really cried at the climax scene when she yelled at her husband at the mountain. It was a real tear-jerker. I've never cried in any romance movies before except Love Letter.

reply

Yeah. I love this movie too much. I didn't cry, but it is a very moving scene. I think the only movies I've ever cried in were My Girl and Fluke.

reply

I love this movie. Definitely one of my favorites.

I didn't cry or anything lol, but I did get a sad feeling every time Itsuki talked about her husband. But the ending was great and wasn't sad at all. It's really a feel-good ending.

Uhm, a question, and don't chuck things at me cuz I'm a lose for not knowing things, please...

I tried to get a version with subtitles because I don't understand Japanese, and most of the film, I think I got...

But what exactly does the women yell? It would be great if someone gave me the what she said in Japanese and possibly, the english translation. Thanks!

reply

Haha, the first time I saw that movie was in Japanese class (but not at a level high enough to understand much of it), without subtitles (or at least English ones... there were Korean ones, but that only helped one or two kids in my class)... and the only part of the movie I really did understand or remember later was the yelling scene...

She is is yelling "ogenki desu ka" "watashi wa genki desu" which means "how are you doing?" "i'm doing well"

this is what she wrote in her first letter to itsuki... and also what the female Itsuki is murmuring in her fever induced stupor...

I think it is her way of letting him know she still cares, and at the same time letting go... even without him she can go on...

reply

definitely the best love story ever!!! i didn't cry when the movie ended but the last scene left a big impact on me!!

reply

hehe i think she actually says "atashi wa..."

"Uns, Tice, Fee Tines a mady!!!"

reply

That's pretty nitpicky. "Atashi" is an informal form of the more formal pronoun "Watashi", used by women in conversational settings (i.e., it's not used in written communication, which is why Hiroko's letter to Itsuki says, "Watashi wa genki desu").

Anyway, the shouting at the mountain scene is pretty popular, but for me it is always the final scene when Itsuki sees the drawing of herself on the back of the library card. The book it is stuck in is "Remembrance of Things Past", by Proust, and is the book that the boy Fujii Itsuki asks the girl Fujii Itsuki to return to the library for him before he moves away. That Itsuki doesn't know what to do with the library card when she sees the sketch is so touching. She knows for the first time that he liked her, and she knows that she can never tell that final truth to Hiroko. To me, that is just a heartbreaking, poignant scene.

reply

agree.....none of the characters said much about love or get into too much *actions* lol.....but you can def. feel the much stronger emotions behind...
I love this movie, and I also love the style, it's just so fresh and so different
I cried so much at the yelling scene and the last scene

Same here

Great (10/10) movie and a favourite of mine.

Me too.

Those simple words, when they are repeated, take on a different meaning.

I would be remiss if I didn't respond to a "greatest love story ever" post with the following: Don't miss Spring Waltz. If you haven't seen it, it's a Korean drama that blows the doors off of most love stories. It's in my top 5 alltime favorites list.

You will fall in love with the music, the story, and the cinematography.

I recommend watching it one night when you can curl up in your most comfortable spot with a snack and shut out the world. It's one of those movies that's so good, I wish I could go back to when I hadn't seen it so I could get that first time enjoyment all over again.

It's on youtube but also you can download it from www.silentregrets.com

Kudoos and thanks to the creators of that film, both German and Korean.

reply

well, it is a Japanese movie, though Krean loved it so much.

By the way, it is my No.1 movie too.

reply

pinghan you didn't pay attention to my post. I was talking about a film called, "Spring Waltz". It is NOT a Japanese movie.

reply

I agree that's it's difficult to stop the tears in this movie.

However my favourite love story is the Chinese movie Springtime in a small town by Tian Zhangzhuang with Wong Kar Wai's In the Mood for love a close 2nd and this one, Love Letter in 3rd place.

My favourite Shinju Iwai movie is not this one thoug, it's All About Lily Chou Chou.

Is this a movie or series? I can find no movie by this name
