armpit hair?

was that really what i think i saw on catherine keener? if so, what was the point the director was trying to make with that?

reply

My friend noticed that when he watched it, too. I'm going to watch it tonight to see for myself. However, I can tell you almost certainly that there was no point trying to be made.

I just saw that movie today and I noticed the same thing.

reply

There was no point. Do you think all women shave their armpits? Catherine Keener just doesn't.

Has anyone listened to the entire Director's comments on the DVD? I know this is intentional, and it's an absolutely wonderful touch - she's wearing an evening gown, for God's sakes!!! I would just love to hear the rationale for it. But I'm listening to the commentary right now and it's an awful lot about what filmmaking means to Tom DiCillo, not that I'm not interested. I'd just rather know why he went with the pits au naturel.

UGH! I am definitely in the minority here, but, maybe the point was it's no big deal! It's pubic hair, hence, it's NORMAL! The fact that a woman has pubic hair unshaved and it gets a conversation tells more about the immature mentality of the objectors than anything.

Pubic hair is on your pubic region. Armpit hair is armpit hair.

I didn't like it. You can see how Keener has polished herself up since this movie.

reply

Perhaps it would be called pubic hair as it develops during puberty which is true for both locations? I am continually amused, although not shocked, at peoples overblown reaction (no not yours Vincent btw) to armpit hair. The reference to her being more polished now that she shaves is just plain funny. Does that mean a woman with very short hair is more polished that one with hair to her butt too? :)

reply

I find it deeply disgusting and total boner killer. Women should shave their armpits.

reply

I noticed it too and found it a bit odd, but not disgusting. I wonder if there was a rational for it though and that's what I came here looking for.

Yes, that is most definitely supposed to be unshaven armpit hair.

The point, in my opinion, is that everybody in this flick has their own personal idiosyncrasies; in a profession built almost entirely upon professionalism, there is at least some unprofessionalism in everybody. For some it's only a very little bit. For others, it's a lot.

For, Nicole, the big idiosyncrasy is her unwillingness to shave her armpit hair for scenes where she doesn't appear to be expected to lift her arms if she isn't wearing sleeves. It's just one more sign of the unwillingness of EVERYBODY to do everything expected of them, in their profession, without at least some bit of additional external motivation.

The sign of personal professional rebellion at its very best.
