Miss Minchin Floats Down Stairs

How on earth did Miss Minchin - or the actress, for that matter - walk down the stairs so gracefully in her opening scene? It was like she was floating! I remember my sister and I trying to do that and looking positively ridiculous (and failing miserably!).

you swivel your hips and walk slightly sideways, with your feet diagonal on the stairs. It creates a smoother gait.

I also thought that was amazing. Even following the steps that the other poster listed I am positive I could never glide as smoothly as she did. I always thought that was a very powerful entrance for her character. It really summed her up.

That's funny, my sister and I always tried to do that too after seeing this movie.

This thread is amazing. I noticed that too when I was little and always tried to imitate it (never successfully).

The quite interesting textual alternative.

When a proper lady walks it appears as though she is floating.
