Why is almost every character in this movie played by an American?

Or someone who sounds American, even if they're not? I found it seriously disconcerting.

Maybe cause the school is in New York in the movie?

Once upon a time there was a magical place where it never rained. The end.

reply

Ah. Thank you. I missed the beginning of it, and assumed that it was closer to the book than it actually turned out to be.

reply

No Problem.  From what I understand based on what others here have said, there are quite a few differences between the book and the movie.

No, this version is set in NY. The original (with Shirley Temple) was set in England. I've never read the book, so I don't know how close either version is, but the original might be a little bit closer, at least in terms of the setting.

It was filmed mostly in the USA.

It's worth pointing out though that Sara was an English girl brought up in India so she wouldn't have had an American accent.

reply

I've always thought it was weird that they didn't have Sara have an English accent, even with the film being set in the USA, because of what you mentioned.

reply

Yes rather like the 1987 version of The Secret Garden where they had lovely little Gennie James playing Mary, again an English girl brought up in India, but again with an American accent.

reply

Liam Cunningham is English, too.

reply

Eleanor Bron is also British and she had to talk American as this New York headmistress. I also thought Sara didn't have an English accent because her mother was American and gets her accent from her.
