What happened to Ben's wife/son?

Did Ben's wife divorce him or did the wife/son die? It's very hard to tell.

His wife left and took the son along.
I don't mean to impose, but I am the Ocean.

Does the book say this? Because it was my impression their kid died. The kid died, Ben turned to drinking to deal with his grief, and the wife left him because of his drinking.

in the beginning he says his wife left him when he's getting a bj from a prostitute who stole his ring.
