'86' exchange

I always found that exchange between him and the bartender a little strange, and to this day I have no idea what it means to 86 someone. Calling the cops or something? Ben hardly said anything wrong and the bartender just snapped at him. And then poured him another drink.

If they 86 you from a bar, they've kicked you out of the place.

86 is restaurant terminology for "all out" or "gone".

When the kitchen yells "We are 86 mashed potatoes!", it means there are no more mashed potatoes to sell.

I always felt the bartender snapped at him because he realized he was showing concern for a guy who was obviously showing no concern for himself.

So: here, have another. It's on me.

Wait a minute... who am I here?

Yuh, makes sense.
Thanks for the replies.

That's not 100% correct.

I worked at a restaurant(Outback) and they would use 86 to mean "get rid of it."

Example: Gimme a BLT 86 the tomatoes

Meaning no tomatoes on it. So I took it as the bartender would literally 86 him, get him out of there.

I concur. I've never heard the other usage as in being out of something, but i've never worked in food service.

reply

It means out. Out of something or leave something out. Or get out.
