Why did they choose Elizabeth Shue for this part?

She just was not convincing as a pro AT ALL!

reply

She had the walk, but she is way too good looking for a street walker. A woman with those looks would be doing high end escorting for rich business executives. The girls out walking the streets and hanging out in bars are scuzzy, usually drug addicts, and never very attractive.

But besides her being way too attractive, I thought she did a great job in the role. She emoted wonderfully, I felt what she felt in every scene.

Nope. I have been propositioned by hookers, very attractive ones, in almost the exact same way that Sera propositions her johns. Usually they chat you up a little at first and you don't know if it is just an attractive woman talking to you or if it is a hooker closing in on a kill, but usually after a few minutes, she will say something to clear the air so you know you she is making a business proposition and not just chatting with you. Why doesn't she work for an escort service? Maybe she doesn't want to hand over half of what she earns to the service. She had already just escaped an abusive pimp.

"...and you don't know if it is just an attractive woman talking to you or if it is a hooker..."

As an ordinary looking Joe Schmoe, I've never in my life been approached by any attractive woman just wanting to chat me up. If it ever happened, I'd immediately know something else was going on.

You guys obviously haven't been to Vegas. The street walkers are that attractive. Especially during the late 80's and 90's before the casinos cracked down on solicitation.

How many prostitutes do you know personally? I thought she was PERFECT, and I know A LOT of prostitutes.

reply

I agree, people have a simplistic view of what a pro looks like. I suppose there are prostitutes as attractive as Elizabeth Shue, but I'd bet those are the 500-1000$ types.

I thought Shue was fantastic. The fact that her speech is very 'middle class-suburban' adds to the complexity of the character.

You know A LOT huh? Don't know if I want to ask how you make a living then...

I've never seen a prostitute before but she was quite believable. She did her research.

reply

You've seen prostitutes, but just didn't realize it. There are a lot more sex workers out there than you might think.

basically every instagram thot is one.

reply

Zing.

reply

Yup, the hookers I've been propositioned by in Vegas have ranged anywhere from very good looking up to and including knockout.

reply

Propositioned on the street, or inside (club, bar, hotel)? There are 3 tiers to prostitution. The bottom rung is the streetwalker. She stays outside, freezing, and selling, her ass. The middle rung is the house girl. She works in a brothel, charges and makes more than the street ho’ and generally has a Madam and not a no-account pimp. The top tier is the callgirl. She works by referrals and by prospecting, hitting quality public spaces like what I’ve enumerated. She has contacts in the hospitality industry (hotels, clubs, restaurants). She’s like Ginger in Casino. She is let in to places that the street ho’ can’t enter.

They chose Shue because she freaking NAILED the roll.

This strikes of something right out of the Shirley Jones in Elmer Gantry playbook. In other words, we have an actress who was mostly known for having a sweet, wholesome, girl-next-door image wanting to break out of such roles, so she plays a prostitute.

reply

I think she did great, she has a body that screams sex. She played the part well.
